my recent history has disappeared and I cannot click my url line to get it as it is greyed out. How do I switch it back?

I haven't changed anything but all of a sudden I cannot see my recent history and the entire url area is greyed out and you cannot click it to get any recent history.

Try to open a new window (Ctrl + N or Firefox > New Tab > New Window) to see if that gives you a working location bar on the Navigation Toolbar.

Hi Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, it doesn't work. I guess I'm going to have to reinstall Firefox all over again. I'm really surprised that I couldn't find the answer in the tutorials on the Mozilla site.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.
