I am still on 56.0.2 on Windows 7 Home. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1157490 has been archived so could not update that. My problem is the same in that when I first open FF the first page I try to connect to takes over 10 seconds. After that FF is fine. I have tried all the usual things to correct this including reinstalling but it continues to be a problem. I have found that if I create a new profile and, after running that profile, I delete all the files in the new profile and copy the ones from the problematical profile, it runs perfectly. After two or three days the symptoms return. I have tried comparing the two profiles but cannot see anything obvious.

(I will update to quantum next year once I am happy any problems have been ironed out)

I am marking this as 'resolved' as I have now moved to quantum. After lots of testing I believe the problem was too many tabs being open (only 4 or 5). However, as no one else seems to have this problem I will 'resolve' and try to love quantum though it is hard work at the moment...

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages:

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Clear the cache and remove the cookies from websites that cause problems via the "3-bar" Firefox menu button (Options/Preferences).

"Clear the cache:

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove the cookies" from websites that cause problems.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> "Use custom settings for history" -> Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Appearance
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

Thank you Mr Wan and cor-el. I have worked through these suggestions previously without success but, when it happens again, I will try them again and report back. Thanks again

Check your Task Manager for excessive use of Ram Any issues with these : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/56.0/releasenotes/

Update please : Flash Player Version: 28.0.0.126 Current Version https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ Step 1: Select Operating System Step 2: Select A Version (Firefox, . . . .) Note: Other software is offered in the download. <Windows Only>

The problem has returned - I have tried all the suggestions here except Refresh. As I totally wiped FF then reinstalled it I would presume a Reset would do nothing more. Looking at Task Manager I can see that FF is using over 50 pc of the CPU for about 10 seconds which coincides with the time it takes to open the first page I want. I have looked at the release notes link Pkshadow gave but can find nothing relevant. I have, of course, disabled all extensions and plugins but that makes no difference. However when I start in Safe Mode the problem does disappear.

If no method ever work for you, then you may choose to Refresh Your Firefox by clicking on the link below ;)

I get the delay on every web page I try to open - not just the first one and I have 32 gigs of ram and an I7 processor. No other browser on my machine has this problem. I have downgraded to version 56.0.2 and it works fine. Something is rotten with Quantum and they need to throw it out and build again from scratch. The Firefox Development Team's silence about these issues on these forums is deafening

Hey Peter!

Could you try to disable your hardware acceleration feature? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-extensions-themes-to-fix-problems#w_turn-off-hardware-acceleration

Hi Zilmar - thanks for you response. I have tried all the suggestions in the link you quoted and none have solved my problem unfortunately. My only work around is as quoted above, ie, creating a new profile, etc...

Does this problem show up if you use the computer in Safe Mode?

Tks WestEnd. Yes it is still the same when I start in Safe Mode with Networking.

Hi Peter,

So, you browser only works in (Firefox) Safe Mode?

Sorry for the late reply Zilmar. As I said in my initial post, I can get around this problem by creating a new profile, removing all files in the new profile and then copying all the files from the old profile to the new. It will then works perfectly for a couple of days before the problem reappears. So, in answer to your question, no, it works fine when doing the above. However the problem does disappear when in Safe Mode.

First off copy to another files is one sure way to keep continuing the problem. A complete uninstall of FF and deleting any Mozilla folders is the best way to insure if the problem isn't a O/S created or FF created. If you don't do this no one can do much to figure the problem out.

Are you using any content blocking extensions?

Are you modifying or disabling Firefox feature via Options/Preferences or directly via about:config?
