hello i've just been attacked in firefox by a virus, it's redirecting my clicks to other sites and slowing firefox down - i'm on a mac, what would you suggest ?
the attack appears to have happened in the last 10 mins, but firefox is running at a crawl now and keeps being hijacked - in that i click on a link but another window opens with ads. i have a mac powerbook from mid 2013, and i'm running 10.8.4 on it. be so grateful if someone could recommend a safe way to remove this attack [pref one that is free...!]. thank you!

Thank you for that! i did install clamxav and run it, looks like a good program. it allows you 30 days free use, but is no longer free after that. It updates known files each day prior to scan. Although it scanned all my files, it found no additional malware.
however the problem i had persisted until i saw an unresponsive script error, which revealed the culprit: the site identified in this error message was asrvvv-a.akamaihd . net
i followed links to then get rid of this pop up scam - and at the moment it seems to have worked. the links i used were to remove from firefox and also safari:
safari: the instructions are halfway down this page: http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-support-scam-pop-ups/ they worked. i've used this site in the past - this guy is an absolute legend....
firefox: i went to the top righthand side of firefox, and clicked on the menu icon [three lines icon] and scrolled down to 'help', which is just an '?' icon at the bottom. from here i clicked on 'reset firefox', which got rid of it. looks like i need to get my add-ons again; which is survivable...
there's also lot's of articles if you google "remove asrvvv-a.akamaihd" for removal on chrome, and on windows and so on [i'm using a mac].
thank you both so much for your help. this seems to have been around for some time, so sorry to take your time, i'm sure you've seen it all before...
cheers

Hi, you can try running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac.
If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you.
thank you for that: i did run it and it removed a number of malwares, but it is still happening. i also tried to remove by using apple's instruction for 'go to folder' various /Library/LaunchAgents/ [ie. Downlite, VSearch, Conduit, Trovi, MyBrand, Search Protect, Buca Apps and Genieo and InstallMac] but i'm still having the problem.

Open the computers programs folder and sort it by date installed.
