When FF is closed, a page of unwanted advertising remains
When I use FF for a while and then shut it down, a single page of advertising material remains. This must be shut down separately. The advertising is not the same each time and is often from respectable companies. The problem is not huge but annoying and an invasion of my time and privacy.

It could either be that you have granted a site to open pop-ups. Which it now does, or an extension is causing that problem.
First, see if there are any websites that have that right, by looking into your list of allowed websites.
If that list is empty, see if there is any extension causing the problem: Try Firefox in safe mode. If the problem goes away in Safe Mode, disable all extensions and enable them one by one to find the culprit.
Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.
