why can I no longer stay logged into selected websites when I close FF?

There are select websites and forums I opt to remain logged on to when I close my browser and shut down my PC. Since my latest upgrade of FF this convenience no longer remains and I have to enter my userIDs and PWs again and again. I'm not pleased with this to say the least. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Also, I now get prompts to install the upgrade each time I try to open FF. Why and what can be done about that?
