How can you set the "find" bar at the bottom of the screen so it does not open automatically when you start typing?

ilduce

Every time I start typing the "find" bar takes over. when I click on the "x" to exit the bar it comes back when I start typing again. Its very annoying. what can i do so I can turn it on and off when I want. [for your info, I have a windows 7 Ultimate 64bit os]

You can turn off the search as you type feature.

  1. Click the Firefox button, then select Options to open the options window
  2. Go to the Advanced panel, and then the General tab
  3. De-select the setting "Search for text when I start typing"

I had the "Search for text when I start typing" unselected. That did not correct the problem. Every time I start typing the "Find" box becomes active. I have to stop typing; close the "Find" bar (by clicking on the "x" in the "Find" bar); and then start typing all over again in the search bar. Very annoying.

Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

The problem resided with the keyboard. I was using a Logitech Wireless Keyboard K350 which comes with a "unifying" USB device. The problem was resolved by removing and reinserting the device and reconnecting the wireless keyboard. Anyone having trouble with the "find text" bar should investigate possible problems with their keyboard. I didn't have any problem with the "find text" box before I installed the wireless keyboard.
