Some Videos Online Won't Work with FireFox
To refresh everyone's memory, I'm using Windows XP Service Pack 3 with FireFox 52.4.0 (32-bit) ESR and I have been having a problem only on a few selective websites where their online videos won't play, I have no trouble with the big websites like You Tube for most of their stuff. Anyway, just a reminder, I'm no computer wiz and I know I need to get better educated about computers, I hope to able to afford a new computer by some time in 2018 Everyone has been so nice here, tried to help me but I found some of the directions too complicated which is on me. Anyway, this is the website you guys were helping me on with videos that won't play with Firefox. http://www.cbc.ca/player/news/Canada/North
Now here's the thing that doesn't make any sense to me, on an older, outdated browser that is no longer supported tried Google Chrome 49 and the videos on http://www.cbc.ca/player/news/Canada/North all work on that old, outsdated browser but not on Firefox 52.4.0 Does this make any sense to anyone? I really hate the idea of having that old Google Chrome 49 especially knowing how Firefox is safer and has more respect for the privacy of others with their browser. Is there are more simple way I can fix Firefox or am I stuck for now using Chrome 49 for that website until I get a new computer? 3 weeks ago I didn't have this problem that's why makes no sense to me. Should someone also know a detailed answer for that CBC website you can report it to them support@cbchelp.zendesk.com Thank you again everyone for being so kind and patient with me, I'm not trying to be a pest to anyone.
When I try to watch those videos on that CBC website I get a blank, black screen and it says the selected item is currently not available. Maybe Firefox is blocking an ad?
Chosen solution
Here is my understanding: anyone distributing a decoder for H.264 video needs to pay royalties to the owner of the patent on that codec. Mozilla believes that is inconsistent with an open web and refuses to enter into such a license. Therefore decoding in (open source) Firefox needs to be done through external components that are properly licensed. Google pays for a license, and therefore it gets to include the decoder directly in (not open source) Chrome.

Those are two completely separate things, actually. Preferences are settings inside of Firefox. (1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful or accepting the risk. (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste gmp and pause while the list is filtered -- any preferences starting with media.gmp should appear. (3) If a preference is missing, then you need to create it. That is why the information in parentheses is there. For example:To create that preference: (A) Select and copy the preference name media.gmp-eme-adobe.enabled (B) In a blank area of the about:config screen, right-click and choose new, then the "type" listed in parentheses, which is Boolean (C) Firefox will display a little form to paste in the preference name, then click OK (D) Firefox will display a form for the preference type, so for Boolean, you can choose between true and false (in this case, you want true) then click OK. Then repeat with any other missing preferences:
- media.gmp-eme-adobe.enabled (boolean, true)
(5) In the search box above the list, type or paste eme. and pause while the list is filtered (6) If needed, change the value of the following preference to true, or create it:
- media.gmp-eme-adobe.forceSupported (boolean, true)
- media.gmp-eme-adobe.visible (boolean, true)
- media.gmp-eme-adobe.version (string, 17)
- media.gmp.decoder.enabled (boolean, true)
- media.eme.enabled (boolean, true)
Someday you will be teaching this to other people. Or someday XP will cease to exist and we can all stop talking about it.
Thank you so very much, I'm so close now, I checked the adds on and it says Primetime Content Cryption Module Provided by Adobe Systems, Incorporated will be installed shortly. Then next it in the options it's on Always Activate. I've been waiting to see if a box appears to let me know it's installed by nothing yet in the last 10 minutes. It still says in the adds ons will be installed shortly. I don't know if I will be teaching this to other people, with all the questions and problems I've had any other blog would've put a dunce cap on me by now, you and everyone else at Fire Fox have been very kind and very patient. Anyway, I know I must be so close. Does it sound like I might not of 100% done this right based on what's happening now? I rebooted the computer just to make sure it wasn't that. Thank you so very much again for breaking everything down for me. I'll wait for any possible further instructions.

I think it's already installed since you created the "17" folder manually. Did you test any videos to see if it's working?

Yes, I tested to see if videos play and still the same thing happening, not working, exact same thing. It's got to be so close now. In the add ons I just checked again and it says will be installed shortly. No box, nothing popped up to let me know something new is in there. I tested the videos on http://www.cbc.ca/player/news/Canada/North

P.S. I also tried to disable Flash Player, that didn't help so I put it back on.

When I did this step (2) In the search box above the list, type or paste gmp and pause while the list is filtered -- any preferences media.gmp should appear. Nothing appeared after putting that in the search box. Adds on still say will be installed shortly but nothing has happened.

***Update***I just went back to make sure and checked step 2 again in the search box I typed GMP and now things appear such as media.gmp-eme-adobe.enabled userset boolean True Please don't give up on me, I know we are so close to getting this thing to work. You've been so very patient and kind, I do greatly thank you for all you've been doing.
We are all working from the post on the other site. Maybe there is a step that we skipped over? I don't have XP handy to test it all myself.

These prefs look like the most important:Can you post the path to the "17" folder and possibly provide a screenshot to confirm that the files are in the correct location?
- media.gmp-eme-adobe.enabled (boolean, true)
- media.gmp-eme-adobe.forceSupported (boolean, true; FF 49.0+)
- media.gmp-eme-adobe.visible (boolean, true; FF 49.0+)
- media.gmp-eme-adobe.version (string, 17; required for manual install now that automatic install is no longer an option)
- media.gmp.decoder.enabled (boolean, true)
- media.eme.enabled (boolean, true; defaults to false if you downloaded a DRM-free version of FF; thanks @heinoganda for pointing this out)
I know progress has been made and that it's very close. I still can't play those videos, here is the update. I checked my add ons again and it says Primetime Content Decryption Module provided by Adobe Systems, Incorporated will be installed shortly. To the left of that statement there's a picture of a triangle with an ! Something must be wrong or missing on my end because I think it's pretty obvious it still didn't install due to my add ons saying this and the fact that no box ever popped up to let me know I installed something and I did test the videos at the CBC website and still nothing as it was before. Hopefully we can figure this out, we are so close now to having this work. Perhaps one of the steps was missing? I did follow all the directions that were posted slowly and I was careful. I'll wait for any possible further directions, I realize you're busy. Thank you again.
Are the files still in the expected location?
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\profile-folder\gmp-eme-adobe\17
(Application Data is a hidden folder. If needed: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-show-file-extensions-in-windows/ )

Yes, that was the first think I checked to make sure which is why I confused as to the part of why on the add ons it says it will be installed shortly but has not happened we know this much because if it did happen then the videos would be working. I just checked it again now to be on the safe side and yes the files are still there. I even had my Symantec scan my entire system to make sure I had no computer virus, malware, or spyware but everything came up clean with no threats found so I'm really puzzled as to why this happening unless could it be there's something else to do in the config?

I clicked also on the Fire Fox profile folder to see the extension and this is what it looks like: C:\Documents and Settings\M\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\l9rsj4u5.default-1509150801221
bold textSo, here's where I'm at now: Under Add-ons/plugins, PCDM was downloaded. However, in yellow, it states that it "will be installed shortly". Stuck at that point. http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/175591-enable-mp4-h264-aac-html5-video-in-firefox-on-windows-xp-without-flash/?page=8 On the Add-ons Manager, click on the gear icon on top, then on "Check for Updates", and it should start downloading.
Just to update everyone I tried this too and it said no updates found. I don't know why I'm having such a hard time with this. :-( I'm sorry to be a bother, please know that I'm very thankful for all efforts being made to try and make this thing work.
I didn't read that whole thread, but I noticed on page 8 this post:
indicating you should edit the media.gmp-manager.url preference value so it reports you have Firefox 51.0 instead of %VERSION% which will be replaced with 52.0 or 52.4.1 (I don't know which):
https://aus5.mozilla.org/update/3/GMP/51.0/%BUILD_ID%/%BUILD_TARGET%/%LOCALE%/%CHANNEL%/%OS_VERSION%/%DISTRIBUTION%/%DISTRIBUTION_VERSION%/update.xml
Adobe no longer hosts the primetime files, that is why you need download the ZIP archive with the files. This means that the whole process is much more complicated. This also means that media.gmp-manager.url no longer can be used to retrieve these files.

But I have Fire Fox version 52.4.0 (32 bit) ESR, do you happen to know the exact url that I should try? I assume this is the one in application/data, do I have that part right? I think it would be a lot easier if Fire Fox would just send an update with that specific plug in so that it will install and work right away. Look how long I've been here on this blog, not everyone is as nice and patient as you and everyone else on this support blog which I thank you and everyone else for trying to help me. This is so close now, it's in the adds on it just stuck to where it says it will install shortly but it never does.

I did download zip files and had some help to make the manual adjustments in Fire Fox but as far as that media.gmp url do you know the exact location and the exact url I need to change it to? I have Windows XP 32 bit with Fire Fox version 52.4.0 ESR If there's any other info you think I should know it's more than welcomed. Thank you very much for trying to help me.
I did some reading but I'm still confused. Those who design the Firefox 52.4.0 ESR are making things too difficult, if I can't find an answer soon it looks like I'm going to have to give up and dump Fire Fox. I also noticed this version of the browser often times freezes up too for a few seconds at times. It seems like Mozilla doesn't want to deal with the plug ins anymore for people to watch videos and if this is the case then they are going to lose more people than just myself. I do thank each and every person on this FIre Fox support blog, all of you have been more than very kind and patient. If anyone can come up with an answer and know 100% for sure how to get that PCDM from Adobe to work/install on XP please let me know. I suspect there are others having the same problem as me. Once again, thank you everyone for all of your kindness and have a good weekend. I'm here if anyone finds anything.
Has anyone figured out exactly how to fix that but in FireFox 52.4.0 (32-bit) ESR with gmp-eme-adobe? This turned out to be far more complicated than I thought it would. I don't know where are what the exact string should be changed to to get it unstuck so that it will install for this version of Fire Fox. I also find it strange that ever since I got the 52.4.0 (ESR) version of Fire Fox every now and then it freezes for a few seconds. Anyway, for now I'm just trying to solve the problem of that gmp-eme-adobe. I checked my add ons again and it is still stuck saying it will be installed shortly but never happens. I tried to disable Flash Player to see if that would help then try a video but it did no good. Sadly I might have to give up on Fire Fox all together. Many thanks again however to everyone for all of your efforts. If anyone can find answer please let me know. Thank you.
It seems like this problem has been happening with other people too going all the way back from 2015 https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1090565
In about:Config when I type gmp and scroll down to one of the preferences name media.gmp-manager.url and where it says value, is that important as to what that URL says?
