I seem to have the old firefox still running after new one was updated. How do I get rid of the old one? everything has slowed down.
Should I try to uninstall one of the apparantly duplicate firefox and if so, how.
Chosen solution
Hello to you all. I re-booted and then got a message to set firefox as default browser which it already was, but I said ok and now things are moving along faster. I also cleaned up my desktop. I don't really know what fixed what but I am grateful to have had you peeps out there thinking about it!

Your Firefox identified itself as the 64-bit version for Windows. It's possible the 32-bit version is still installed if you just switched (or the installer switched you).
But first... where do you see multiple Firefoxes running?
two icons are in the bottom toolbar and both appear to be operating. thanks for the reply.
Let's check what each one does if we can. If you right-click the pinned icon, do you get the "jump list"? Just up from the bottom of the jump list for a pinned icon will be a "Mozilla Firefox" entry. if you right-click that and choose properties, Firefox should display the "Shortcut" tab and highlight the "Target" field. This is the command line used to start Firefox. Can you copy/paste that somewhere (e.g., Notepad document) where you can easily see the whole path. Then repeat with the other taskbar icon and compare the two command lines.
Usually you can't have an exact duplicate. If there is an exact duplicate, I suggest unpinning the icon from the taskbar and re-pinning it again.
It WAS a copy, at least all the verbiage in the target line looked the same: C:\ProgramFiles(86)Mozilla Foxfire\foxfire.exe" so I unpinned one of them but still all is slow. Does un pinning make it delete or do I have to try to uninstall one of them?
We occasionally have a thread where Firefox doesn't stack open windows on the pinned icon but starts a different icon. Often unpinning and repinning fixes that, but not always. However, I think that is more of an aesthetic issue and shouldn't affect how Firefox actually runs if the command lines are identical. The reason is that if you try to launch
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
from two different shortcuts, Firefox will detect that it is already running and add a new window to the existing instance of Firefox.
So Firefox being slow probably has some other cause. Does anything in this article help: Quick fixes if your Firefox slows down.
Try to start Firefox in Safe Mode to see if that works better.
- Windows: hold down the Shift key while starting Firefox
- Mac: hold down the Options key while starting Firefox

I am still not totally sure what caused my problem to be resolved, but the re-booting and cleaning off the desktop and un pinning one of the "copies" of firefox resulted in being back to normal speed.
