I downloaded an add-on to have firefox reset itself everytime I close/reopen. Now I want to remove it. It's not listed as an add-on. How can I get rid of it?

Please provide a screenshot of that toolbar and the area around it, and mark exactly where you are typing your search criteria.

It is best to use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot and make sure that you do not exceed a maximum file size of 1 MB.

Then use the Browse .... button below the Post a Reply text box to upload the screenshot.

Thank you for the reply and information. Here are the two screenshots. One is the new tab where I have typed search information into the toolbar. The second is the yahoo search page that appears once I hit enter. I realize that I can use the actual google toolbar to get google results. But, in the past I was able to use both toolbars and get google results from either of them.

That big box on the left is the address bar or box. Typing something in here should use your default search engine.

Yes, I understand that. That's the problem...... My default is set to Google and as you can see my results come up in yahoo.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Thank you. I have already done this several times, as I mentioned above. It results in the same problem ~ 30 Minutes after the computer sits idle.

Download the Mozilla Search Reset {web link} This add-on is very simple: on installation, it backs up and then resets your search preferences and home page to their default values, and then uninstalls itself. This affects the search bar, URL bar searches, and the home page.

Do you get the same result if you use the "search box" (which has the "g") logo, to the right of the "address box"? The address bar and search bar are designed to use the same search service (the one selected on the search bar).

If you get Yahoo for Google both ways, could you try a different search engine on the search bar such as Startpage.com? You can install its search plugin from this page: https://startpage.com/eng/download-startpage-plugin.html

If a different search engine works, I have two thoughts:

(1) Your Google search plugin has been modified. It is refreshed when you update or reinstall, so that should fix it.

(2) You (still) have malware that specifically redirects Google searches. I saw a thread on Google's support forums like that, but it does not appear that the cause was definitively identified: Default search engine set to google, keeps searching with yahoo - Google Product Forums.

Also, in case you haven't reviewed it for a while, check that your Firefox connection setting is not using a proxy or custom DNS that you did not set.

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button

The default is "Use system proxy settings" (piggyback on IE's LAN settings), but you could try "No proxy".
