Why did you close down this question when it clearly wasn't resolved?

Why did you close down the question for why Firefox suddenly won't allow people to access their gmail account through your browser when up to now (for me) it's been working fine, when clearly the question hasn't been resolved? I notice here that you had 3000+ questions regarding this - and among those 3000+ souls surely there must have been one superior intellect who could have come up with a simple answer - but no - didn't happen. I simply cannot find anything like a simple answer and yet the problem still exists.

Hi, no, my question wasn't removed and it wasn't a duplicate, I was referring to the 3000 plus questions from users all over the world who have written in about the sudden inability to access their gmail through Firefox when it was working fine only days ago for me. I must say though, Thankyou for answering my question so kindly. Sincerely.

I apologise for asking the question so abrasively, I didn't mean to sound so rude, I was just venting to the 'ether' in general out of built up frustration after not being able to access my gmail quickly this morning.

My gmail is my main email for everything and I needed to get in there quickly for something important this morning and it wouldn't let me and I just got mad. I have done a re-install and a clean up. Nothing has helped.

The ironic thing is that once I calmed down I could access gmail on my phone, on my tablet and on my daughter's tablet - just not on my PC which is where I usually go. So by process of elimination I'd say that Firefox have dropped something on my (our) computer(s) that's changed something fundamental and that's preventing the access I once had.

It was probably intended to improve some other part of Firefox's performance but in the process it's actually causing problems with Google products, or at least with gmail. I'll try to be patient but I'm going to have to get rid of Firefox and get used to using something else. Life's too short to try and work it out, I'm no technical expert and have no desire to be one. I just want the thing to work. Thanks anyway.  :)

If your question is being removed, It is obviously because it was a duplicate, it also forces me to post duplicate answers. I would wait for official Firefox representative to comment on that, and for the time being.

Greetings. I am not certain if that is the case, but from what It seems like, it could be. With the latest windows and Firefox updates, some clashes have been happening. It appears that the majority of users haven't been able to access it. I would recommend using CCleaner to clean up any registries and cached files for Firefox and do a reinstall and see if that helps with the issue.

I understand you fully, that you want the software to work as designed. Sometimes, fails, bugs or crashes happen, I am sure they are working on resolving the issue. And if it is a massive request way, the lights will go on at their place to quickly take care of it.

Chrome or Opera are your best alternatives for the time being. Additionally, just a hunch, it could also be Malware related. You could try looking at your Firefox if there are any unrecognized extensions, removing them might help you out. Good luck!

Nb: Josh, the question "why won't Firefox let me access my gmail" was the question I was referring to. I found it when searching for the answer to that question and discovered it had been previously been asked over 3000 times since the year 2010 but there seems to have been no satisfactory answer to it, yet Firefox had closed off the question! Without a resolution! That's just wrong! I can't stand seeing something not brought to it's logical conclusion. I deplore things left hanging. Anyhow, I must leave it hanging here, because it will drive me nuts if I focus on it. I'll simply dump Firefox and use another browser. Solved!

The issue we are having is new, All other answers to that question have been archived as you may have noticed if did a google search on the subject. These archived answers may not work for the issue now. You are welcome to do a search and try the archived answers. I am not sure what is going on with this issue as we all volunteer our time here so some have more knowledge of immediate crises than others. Just remember that there is a 55 beta released so sooner or later there will be a update which I am sure will fix the issue.

Good luck , wait and someone will help sooner or later with the information that may fix your issue. (updated fix SP)

This is in response to a reply I received from Co-rel this morning via email. I don't know how to reply to him because my reply 'bounced' so I'm pasting it here and I wondered if you could help me pass this on to him:

(from Cor-el) cor-el Jul 20, 2017, 5:15:46 AM Can you attach a screenshot?

My reply: Hi Cor-el I've just tried to recreate that situation to get a screen shot but I don't think I'll be able to because it related to where Firefox wants you to authenticate your identity the first time before you need to reply to a help desk response to your 'help' request. It'll never be my 'first time' again for that particular question so I can never replicate that because I've just tried and it won't do it.

When it initially happened and I was going through that process it wouldn't let me back in using gmail. Instead it threw me back to the gmail log in screen asking for my full name and password. So I started going through that process but when I typed in the password it kept telling me my password was incorrect.

I knew that wasn't the case but to be sure of that I quickly opened up chrome and went to gmail through there. It worked perfectly using the same password that's recorded in that browser (on my personal PC) which is exactly the same password I'd just tried to key in through the gmail login screen in Firefox. So I knew my password didn't need changing.

My (uneducated) guess is that something in Firefox is forgetting information that's been stored for the users or has become corrupt in some way. That might also explain the screen that comes up when a user is trying to get into their gmail through Firefox initially. The error message tells you that your cookie info is wrong and it offers several different 'solutions' to try, none of which works. *screen shot of that:

I think it's that reason, (it being the first time I needed to get back in there to reply to the initial Firefox help pages response using my gmail) and I can't recreate that situation again to send a screen shot of because the circumstances were a 'one-off' and it will never be that 'first time' to enable me to produce that again.

I wish I'd had the presence of mind to get a screen shot of it at the time, but I was focused on a different, very personal personal issue and looking for a very important response to an email at the time and not worrying about getting a website working again which in the big scheme of things is very important too. But my personal frustration about trying to get past these new barriers preventing me from getting on with 'business as usual' overshadowed things at the time.

I hope this helps, it's the best I can do given the current circumstances. I'm using Chrome now but I've always preferred Firefox which is much more user friendly and doesn't behave like Hitler wanting to know everything about you including your inside leg measurement and 'what-not' so I'm very disappointed that this has happened. Thanks for trying to get to the bottom of this. Good luck with it.

Hi Thrilledtopieceswithnothing, did you try what Google suggested with clearing cache and cookies?

When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Ctrl+r to check progress.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Sometimes there are related situations that are difficult to distinguish from bad cookies:

  • Settings that prevent sites from using cookies in certain ways. See: Websites say cookies are blocked - Unblock them.
  • Corruption in the database file that stores your cookies (cookies.sqlite)
  • A changed setting that blocks access to local storage

But we can come back to how to check on those if the first few things do not help.

Yes jscher2000 but I couldn't clear the cookies in Firefox because none of the 'clear the cookies' instructions related to anything I could find on the Firefox interface I had, however I do have good news. My Firefox is back and working again and I can access my gmail! That's because I did a system restore on my PC and pushed the restore point back beyond the latest microsoft update and voila! - now I'm back in business. I think there's an incompatibility issue going on here. I'll be monitoring every update from now on to prevent that little trick from happening again. Sincere thanks for your thoughtful response. Cheers.
