Chosen solution

You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure that nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js file in the profile folder that stores session data. When sessionstore.js is deleted you lose App Tabs and Tab Groups and open tabs and you will have to recreate them, so if necessary make a note or bookmark them.

You can check for problems with preferences. Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in current Firefox releases.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

Mine opens to a blank page.

Since updating to firefox 44, it doesn't open to my homepage but to an empty tab. When I hit the home icon it takes me to my homepage but it should open to it.

Hi evie127, aryone has https://www.google.com/ as the home page, is yours also Google by any chance or is it a different site?

To both of you, if you launch a new window (on Windows: Ctrl+n, on Mac: Cmd+n), does it show the home page or a blank page? It should load the home page automatically. In other words, is this problem specific to the initial startup?

If I launch a new window (on Windows: Ctrl+n), it show my home page. But when I close the firefox and open new firefox, it show blank page.

Hi aryone, could you also double-check the shortcut you use to start Firefox. Either:

  • Desktop shortcut: right-click the icon, choose Properties
  • Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, right-click Mozilla Firefox, choose Properties

Windows normally will select the Shortcut tab. If not, go ahead and click the Shortcut tab.

The Target line should not have anything after this part:

  • 64-bit Windows, standard 32-bit Firefox: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
  • Otherwise: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

If any URLs are listed after that, clear them out and save your change. To test, you can either:

  • Desktop shortcut: double-click the icon to launch a new window
  • Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, click Mozilla Firefox to launch a new window

If you get your home page, it worked.

Some users have reported a faster fix for a pinned taskbar item:

  • unpin the current icon
  • go into the Start menu, right-click Mozilla Firefox, then Pin to Taskbar

Any improvement?

Hmm, let's see whether anyone else with this problem joins the thread and has any new ideas. Until then, unfortunately, you'll need to click the Home button or use the Alt+Home keyboard shortcut when you start up.

There is a possibility that some of you are suffering from a known bug with Firefox 44. ( Bug 1243549 - When I run (launch, open...) Firefox for the first time during a session I get a blank page instead of my usual home page. )

The defining features of the bug are

  • Firefox has been set to clear History on closedown
  • An intermittent problem on closedown {You may not be directly aware of that)
  • Problems on restarting after the close down issue. This could result in for instance a blank tab displaying.
