How can I see that a Firefox window is in private mode
Hi,
while I think the new design is quite nice for the eyes, I fund something missing which I had in the previous versions. I often have different windows open, some are in private, some in normal mode. Not always I can remember which window was which. In the old versions, private mode was indicated in the web page name in the tap. Now this indication is missing. Is there any possibility to get this back?
thanks, Christian

Hello,
You can get private mode on Firefox by simply pressing CTRL+SHIFT+P
See this for all information regarding Private browsing Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history.
Moreover to know if the window of Firefox is open in Private mode or not look for a Mask icon on the top left corner.

In a private window, a white-on-purple mask icon should appear just to the left of the three Windows title bar buttons.
However, it seems to disappear in full screen mode (when mousing up to the top).
Between the two replies and the article, the mask is shown in 3 different places. Strange!
Hi, I already knew HOW to enter private mode (though through menue, not through keypress). The information of the maks icon however was what I needed, many thanks! In my mozilla (with menue bar activated) it is in the top right corner).
kind regards, Christian
jscher2000,
- That KB article has the Tiltlebar showing.
- The screenshot that Aman posted looks like a theme or "buttons" treatment is present, the green + for Open a New Tab. And there's something that looks suspicious on the right-side of the BTB, like a search box, maybe, or other added "box". Not a default installation any more, IMO.
- Your screenshot looks default, without the Titlebar.
Plus there are probably differences based upon the Operating System version. On my XP installation of 29, the "mask" is taller and extends up out of the window proper to the window border (without any extensions installed), like the orange Firefox button did for me .
You can use an extension to get Private Browsing mode support per tab.
When you are in a Private Browsing mode tab the 3-bar Firefox menu button gets a purple background or you get a purple PB mask on the Menu bar or Tab bar (Linux) unless you are in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use private browsing mode).
- Private Browsing mode tabs get a dashed underlining
- You can toggle Private Browsing mode off/on via the right-click context menu of a tab
