After upgrading to firefox 24 my URL bar has a weird space on the left side. I tried reinstalling with the exe (I originally used the updater) and it went away temporarily. After I rebooted the space reappeared. I also tried using 25 Beta 1, which worked until I rebooted.

I've poured over my about:config to see if anything stood out as a possible cause but I didn't identify the issue.

Hello MC-Sammer, Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

Only the "green" button has changed to include the site name. That means that website is using an Extended Validation (EV) certificate.

  • See - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-tell-if-my-connection-is-secure
    • A green padlock plus the name of the company or organization in green means that website is using an Extended Validation (EV) certificate. An EV certificate is a special type of site certificate that requires a significantly more rigorous identity verification process than other types of certificates. While the gray padlock indicates that a site uses a secure connection, the green padlock indicates that the connection is secure and that the owners of the domain are who you would expect them to be.
    • With the EV certificate, the Site Identity Button assures you that paypal.com is owned by Paypal Inc., for example. Not only does the padlock turn green on the Paypal site, it also expands and displays the name of the owner in the button itself.
  • See - http://www.dria.org/wordpress/archives/2008/05/06/635/
    • Not only does the Site Identification button go green on the Paypal site, it also expands and displays the name of the owner in the button itself. The Site Identification dialog presents further detailed information.

After resetting Firefox twice I think I found the issue.

On my machine I have a fingerprint scanner through the AuthenTec TrueSuite. When I disabled the addon my issue appears, and when I reenabled it the issue went away. I'll do some more testing.

I have the same issue. I started in Safe Mode and the issue persists.

I have reset the settings/theme, disabled all plugins and I still have the space in the bar. Even when I go to websites that have enhanced/extended validation the space also shows ups (to the right of the green validation text) .

This issue started with the upgrade FF 24, the issue did not exist on previous versions. Any ideas?

Do you have a TrueSuite plugin? (plugin like Flash, silverlight, shockwave, etc) If so, try enabling it and restarting Firefox. That fixed it for me.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Interesting. I have SimplesPass Plugin (came with the HP machine) and when I enable it, the space in the bar disappears, which is great, however I don't use and don't want to have that plugin enabled. If I disable the plugin, the space shows up.

Is this a bug? Why would Firefox allow a disabled/inactive plugin to interfere with the URL bar/box?

Do these plugins install with corresponding extensions? Plugins do not usually modify the UI.

When I go to Add-ons > Extensions, I can see that there are no extensions associated with the SimplePass plugin. Is that what you were asking Jscher?

The weird thing is that even when I start in SafeMode the problem does not go away. The problem only goes away if I enable the plugin. It is very counter-intuitive.

It may be some regression within Firefox 24, I can't say for sure. I know it affected 25b1 And I tried a couple different methods of removing the plugin with no success.

I basically just turned off "Website logon" within the authentec truesuite so it doesn't prompt to store credentials and left the plugin enabled.

It may be possible to delete the DLL & reg-entry for it, then create a new profile but I'm happy with my solution.

If you know how to use the DOM Inspector then you can check out what the id and CSS code and other properties this space has.

The DOM Inspector (DOMi) has a menu item (Edit > Select Element By Click) and a toolbar button "Find a node to inspect by clicking on it" (left icon on the toolbar in the DOMi).

  • open the browser window in the DOMi (File > Inspect Chrome Document) and choose the first from the list.
  • click the "Find a node to inspect by clicking on it" button and use the keyboard (Alt Tab) or the Task bar to go back to the browser window (do not click in the browser window other than the title bar).
  • click that element with the mouse and keep the button pressed until you see a red border to indicate the the DOMi has located that element in the DOM tree.
