Can't close last Tab, can't close browser, how can I fix this?

I can open & close tabs just fine, except when I try to close the final tab to close the browser & get off of the internet. This problem seems to prevent me from then turning off my computer using the Windows menu. In order to close the internet I have to turn off the power to my computer manually. When I say manually, I mean I have to turn off the power strip that it's plugged into. Then when I get back on the internet the same problem occurs. What is preventing me from closing the final tab? I never had this problem previously, now all of a sudden I have it chronically. Is there a way to fix this? Incidentally your help pages are terrible. The questions it tried to relate this question to weren't even close to the same problem.

hello jackson3, sorry that the site didn't produce accurate results - the problem like you've described is quite unusual though.

can you replicate this behaviour when you launch firefox in safe mode once?

another way to troubleshoot the issue might be to reset firefox...

in case this doesn't bring any results either, i'd recommend a full scan of your system with the security software already in place and different tools like the free version of malwarebytes, adwcleaner & microsoft safety scanner.

Note that if you've set the browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab pref to false that you need to close the window via Firefox > Exit Firefox or via Close Window.

  • Windows: "Firefox > Exit or File > Exit"
  • Mac: "Firefox > Quit"
  • Linux: "File > Quit"

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.
