Hi, my home page is stuck on http://search.conduit.com/?ctid=CT3277370&octid=CT3277370&SearchSource=61&CUI=UN24725392001278164&UM=2&UP=SPDAD18CB6-0DEE-483D-A977-2EE57A45E754 I've reset firefox to try and fix it, I've even looked for and tried to delete my user.js file but none existed. How do I get rid of this problem? My computer uses windows 8 if that's relevant.

Did you check browser.startup.homepage pref on the about:config page?

Check for the presence of a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to initialize some prefs.

This also involves the presence of a .js (JScript) file, probably in "defaults\pref" folder, that specifies to process this mozilla.cfg file.

If you have .js files apart from the channel-prefs.js file, that sets app.update.channel, in the defaults\pref folder then open this file in an editor like Notepad and please post its content.

There shouldn't be a mozilla.fcg file present unless you've created it yourself to initialize some prefs.

If you have this mozilla.cfg file then best is to do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before reinstalling a fresh copy of Firefox.

It sounds like you have a third party program that has taken over your search engine, home page, and/or the default new tab page. Fortunately, this can be remedied easily:

  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP), and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.
  2. In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.
  3. Select the toolbar you wish to remove.
  4. Click the remove button.
  5. Click "Restart now" if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.

After Firefox restarts, install the Search Reset Tool. This will remove the rest of the traces of this program from your Firefox.

For further information, please read Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

Cor-el, I found that the about:config browser.startup.homepage was set to the problem web address and that the browser.startup.homepage_override.buildID and the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone were both set to weird things as well. I was able to reset the latter two, but when I tried to reset the homepage address itself nothing happened. When I tried to modify it, it wouldn't respond either. I found no Mozilla.cfg in my firefox folder though. When I tried starting it in safe mode, the same problem homepage popped up.

P.S. Amitshree, I had already tried that.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

I associate Conduit with the company behind many add-ons that contain the name Community Toolbar. When reviewing your extensions, look for one of those.
