I recently updated my Firefox to 17.0. Now every so often, just enough to be annoying I will have my webpage random change on me to go to http://freshbrowserupdate.com/. It says my Firefox is so far out of date that it might not work and wants me to download Firefox 17.1 SP1, 17.1 SP 2, or 17.1 plus antivirus. If I click on help in the top toolbar it says my firefox is up to date. I've done virus scans and found nothing. Is this site some virus or phishing site and how do I block it or stop it?

Chosen solution

yes, this site is malicious site & don't run the installer file that starts downloading automatically, it will further infect your system.

when the site is opening up without any interaction by you, this might also be a sign that malware is already active on your pc. please also do a full scan of your system with the security software already in place and also different tools like the free version of malwarebytes and see if they can find and remove malicious software. for more information see Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware

also go to firefox > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there.

Thanks for the answers! I figured this was something bad. It never hurts to ask if others are having the same problems. It just worried me when it kept happening but my Norton Virus scan wasn't picking anything up. I'll be looking into both of your suggestions to try and stop this annoyance.
