How can I change the mandatory/default https google search. I like to make decisions for myself, not have software companies try to think for me. That is why, before now, I have loved Firefox.

Hello John99--

Your first easy, simple, quick and painless install from your: http://mycroft.mozdev.org/search-engines.html did the trick "quick bang" So now I have both Google versions in my search box and I am happy again with Firefox...and thank you very much! Firefox searches from at least 3 different places. Which ones are most important to you:

(1) Search box/search bar (the one where you select the preferred search engine from the drop-down)

(2) Location bar AKA address bar

(3) Built-in home page

Question owner

I currently like my own website as my home page. I have FF set to open with a blank page, which I like and is a great feature. When I just tried a search in Location bar and ended up at yahoo and I don't like that! Really, I want to use the search box as I always have. I either don't have the option or it is not apparent to me to choose between http://www.google.com/ or https://www.google.com/. Is there a solution? Ideally, I would like both!

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Hello John99--

There is so much I love about FF and its options that I can choose from. I wish that page would have turned up in the 100 searches I did today!!!

Just forgive me for a little rant here but it is really starting to bother me that between all the juggling balls of operating systems, security systems, and softwares and software developers interacting (and starting to get into bed with each other) it feels more and more like all the main players in the web software business are trying to out-think me and not give me the responsibility to make those choices. I like choices, but I don't like software vendors making them for me. I guess I must be in some sort of "Zen Simplicity" mode while everyone else is wanting more and more apps, social networking and constantly updating softwares. I spent the first part of this week dealing with Adobe issues after their latest release and then I got this one with https google on FF. Sorry for blowing off steam.

Helpful Reply

Glad to have helped.

For the most part Firefox usually gives the user a choice of things, but not all choices can be easily exposed and some need add-ons.

There are the three methods of searching as mentioned in the first post. Also you may search from right click on text, and maybe add additional options using search tools https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/search-engines/

Question owner

Hello John 99--

Well, I did of course search for search engine add-ons but after the first three pages I gave up. Nothing gave me the direct link to http://mycroft.mozdev.org/search-engines.html .

But all is well with FF now so thanks again!

Hi globalsoundtrade, it was an unanticipated consequence of the way address bar autofill was implemented. See this thread for assistance with a workaround for your site: typing in url for my company website sends it to https index page in Firefox, but not IE or Chrome, and the behavoir is not wanted.
