First, you can terminate a running Firefox process using the Task Manager.

Ctrl+Shift+Esc to launch it

Usually by this time, Firefox is no longer listed on the Applications tab, but if it is, try terminating it there.

Click the Processes tab and look for both of these:

plugin-container.exe (used to run Flash and many other plugins)
firefox.exe

Click each and then click End Process.

After that, you can close the Task Manager and you should be able to start Firefox.

As for why that happens, you could check this article: Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix -- skip to the section awkwardly entitled "Firefox hangs when you quit it"

I am havign this same problem. I closed the browser manually from task manager.. didn't help. I went to the profile folder when directed to Delete the parent.lock lock file, but there WAS no parent.lock lock file to delete. I still have the problem. I can not use firefox AT ALL. It crashes then won't restart as its 'already running but unresponsive.'

Hi heaseba, can you try starting Firefox in Safe Mode? After making sure Firefox is fully shut down, hold the Shift key when double-clicking the Firefox icon. You should see a dialog with several choices. Ignore those and click "Continue in Safe Mode." This will start Firefox with your add-ons disabled. If this runs correctly, I would suspect a problem with one or more of your add-ons. To disable all of them, you can close Firefox, restart in Safe Mode, and check the box to disable all your add-ons (first box only!). Then click Make Changes and Restart.

Does that make any difference?

I'm not sure what you mean by 'if this runs correctly'. It started up in safe mode and when I shut it down it did restart without the error message. I will try using it in safe mode and see if it continues to crash and get back to you on that one.

YES! I disabled all the add ons and it worked. As I went to each page that it would not display I enabled specific ones. I can now view the pages I want with no crashes. Thank you for your assistance. Much appreciated
