I recently had to reset my plugins using Firefox 12 in safemode to get rid of an extension/add-on causing a redirect problem. All has been well, except a plugin I needed no longer works. It is called "missing-e" and is for Tumblr.

I have tried reinstalling it at least 5 times, per their instructions, and am now here after they said it was a browser issue. I do get prompted to install it to firefox, I have it install, I get the message it was installed correctly - but then it never shows up in either the Extensions or Plugins area under Add-Ons area (though nothing ever shows up in Extensions). And the features it enables in tumblr are not enabled.

The 'missing-e' people sent me here saying they believe this is a browser problem.

Chosen solution

-> Create a New Profile to check if your current profile is causing the problems, as described in this article -> Basic Troubleshooting - Make a New Profile

  • Now start Firefox using this newly created profile.

-> IF that New Profile works then you can recover your History, Bookmarks, Passwords, etc. from the Old Profile, as described in this article -> Recover important data from an old profile

Check and tell if its working.

Your Plugins are listed in the Plugins panel in the Add-ons Manager

  • see this article -> Managing plugins
  • IF your required plugin is Disabled, then Enable it as mentioned in the above article

Check and tell if its working.

The plugin NEVER shows up there. It says it installs, but it doesn't. It does not show up in the Add-Ons area. Neither in Extensions or Plugins or anywhere. I have tried deleting the pluginreg.dat file from my profile, I have tried looking for "xpinstall.enabled" (though I have windows 7) but I don't have that setting in my about:config area, and I could find no other setting that looked like it might disallow the installation.

I have also tried having the "missing-e" file itself downloaded to my pc and drag-dropped it into the Add-Ons, but that did not work either. It always says it installs successfully, but never shows up anywhere and the features never work in the browser.

-> Start Firefox in -> Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if your add-ons/extensions are conflicting/causing the problems.

Check and tell if its working normally while using Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

I already did that - in my first post I explained that I reset everything in safe-mode already. And I have ZERO of the installed plugins enabled. None of them are enabled at this point because I did not want to risk going through the whole redirect issue again.

This problem with the "missing-e" plugin occurred sometimes after that reset which was a couple of days ago. I noticed the features weren't working, and then noticed the whole plugin wasn't even there anymore. And I cannot get it to reinstall.

Are you talking about plugins or extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) as you mention Safe mode?

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.

Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.

New files will be created when required.

See "Corrupt extension files":

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available.

cor-el: Nothing shows up at all under Extensions. I have only been talking about plugins. However, creating a new profile resolved whatever the issue was. With the new profile I can see things in "Extensions" and have been able to install the "missing-e" plugin.

Thanks so much for your help.

Much love mha007! Creating a new profile seemed to solve the issue! I now have the "missing-e" plugin installed and it is showing up in the Add-Ons area. Thanks so much for your diligent help today. :)

You are welcome! & glad to see its working..
