Firefox does not auto-update itself, even though it is set to.

Since early 2011, I have set Firefox to auto-update itself. However, this does not happen and I completely missed the switch to a rapid release cycle until about october 2011, when I noticed that I still had version 4 while people were talking about version 7 or 8. I then manually downloaded the latest version. Since then, I still have to download updates manually even though I have set it to auto update.

By now, I'm on aurora version 12, and I basically have to download and install it manually every day when the new version comes out.

When I go to Help>About, it tells me to apply the downloaded update. When I click this and start up again, I get the same screen, so either it updates but does not notice it, or the update fails. (see screenshot at http://i.imgur.com/mrPvw.png)


Uninstalling and installing Aurora/FF did not solve the problem. I noticed that, after doing this, my bookmarks and previous tabs magically came back, even though I had set it to delete all personal data.

Opening aurora/ff with add-ons disabled, or in another profile, does not solve the problem either. Neither does disabling and re-enabling auto-updates.

Google does not seem to find other people who have the same problem, only people complaining about auto-updates when they don't want them - the opposite problem

Nightly builds and Aurora builds are updated daily to get new patches for testing code (Aurora follows the Nightly builds with a delay of 6 weeks).

You should stay with the release version if you are not an experienced user that knows how to deal with issues.

Thank you for your reply. Like I said in my post, I have been having this issue since the summer of 2011, when I was still using regular firefox. In fact, I had made the switch to Aurora in the hopes that this would be solved, given the ongoing changes to the update process. Going back to regular Firefox, which seems to be your only suggestion, would therefore not solve my problem, and it would rob me of the opportunity to enjoy and give feedback on other new features.

In addition, like I said in my original post, I have tried several of the most common ways of dealing with such issues, to no avail. After an extensive search, I also couldn't find anybody else with this bug. That is why I turned to this support forum. If you know of a way this problem could be solved, I would very much appreciate it.
