This happened to me once because the history settings had been changed to stop remembering my browser history. Try going to the Firefox options and check if Firefox is set to Remember History.
Start Firefox in Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Another possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
