I seem to have caused my emails to disappear completely. I cannot find them anywhere on my macbook. I don't think there has been anything unusual from outside sources. 

I fully expect that I am the cause of it, I am getting old and my so are my eyes and fingers.

Which start page is displayed when you launch Thunderbird ? Do you se a folder pane, a thread pane and a message pane or does Thunderbird prompt you to "set up your existing email address"?
