Open a doc. file attachment in thunderbird

When I try to open a doc. attachment in an email, nothing happens when i click open. I am using Windows 11 and have set the default programs to open such a file to various different programs to see if there is a difference, but there is none.

Is there an entry for doc files in Settings/General/Files & Attachments? If so, use Delete Action to remove it, restart TB, double-click a doc attachment, and Browse... (not pick from the list) to the exe for the associated app, e.g. word.exe.
