A re-boot seems to have solved the problem. I had not thought of this before asking for help....

It's possible that maybe one of your installed add-ons is overriding the default Ctrl + F functionality. Try running Firefox in Safe Mode to see if the issue still occurs.

If it doesn't happen in Safe Mode, the problem is likely caused by an add-on.
