How can I remove sites that I never use from the "Top Sites" that are displayed when I open a new tab?

When I open a new tab in Firefox, there is a heading called "Top Sites," and icons for several sites. These include sites I have never visited and never intend to -- specifically Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit -- and occasionally sites I've never heard of. I'd like to be able to remove the things I don't use and leave room for the sites I actually visit just about daily.

Hi, should be here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/customize-new-tab-page

Separate Security Issue, please update your Flash 29.0 r0 & Flash 30.0 r0 by removing both as is a security risk and a conflict : https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html Reinstall Flash Player Version: 30.0.0.113 Current Version https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/ Step 1: Select Operating System Step 2: Select A Version (Firefox, . . . .) Note: Other software is offered in the download. <Windows Only>

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Best is to use 'remove from history' in the three dot menu of a tile to cleanup the history. Dismiss stores websites you remove in a pref (about:config -> browser.newtabpage.blocked and prefs.js) and this pref will get quite large if you keep dismissing pages.

Although I had had trouble navigating the setup when I tried to remove these things before, I was able to manage it following Pkshadow's link. I think I have gotten rid of the intruding sites, although a whole bunch of new ones showed up. There were a couple that wouldn't leave, but mostly it's okay now.

I went to the second link, about Flash, in that same post, but the instructions made me nervous that I would lose something I need.

I had already done all that before I saw that cor-el recommended deleting the history rather than just dismissing. I'll try that if they come back.

I didn't understand the second part of cor-el's reply at all. I don't know what most of that stuff is.

Thank you both for taking the time to help me. Sometimes these "improvements" just get in the way for those of us who aren't techies!

I've seen these three-dot things popping up all over the place as I use my computer, and have never known what they were for. On one site they send me to something called a "permalink" that doesn't seem to have any function at all. Is there any universal meaning to the three dots?

Hi, you are only uninstalling Flash, Flash does not hold anything but Flash Cookies and some related stuff to licensing, it is not part of Firefox or your OS. It just hooks to Firefox. Having both versions is a security issue as well they will conflict. The 27 version has faults that permit hundreds of ways to attack you. Just run the uninstaller and reinstall as was pointed out.

Suggest follow what you can of cor-el's instructions as that will mean a lean Firefox not bloated with stuff that no longer use.

3 Dots signify a Menu, as does the 3 Dots in the Address Bar. It is to make it unobtrusive to the experience.

You can check this pref on the about:config page.

  • browser.newtabpage.blocked

If you want to reset this pref in case its value is very large then you can do this via the right-click context menu.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.

Thank you both very much, Pkshadow and cor-el. I will follow your suggestions.

I'm happy to report that the unwanted icons in "Top Sites" have stayed away.
