The change with the Bookmarks / History /Synced Tabs Sidebar came with Firefox 57 which was released 6 months ago. IMO, the main change was the addition of a Toolbar button which didn't exist in Firefox 56 or previous versions.

That new button hasn't been an issue for me because I have been using { Ctrl + B ) to open the Bookmarks Sidebar since I started using Firefox back in Aug 2002 when it was called Phoenix. I just hide that Toolbar Button, along with the Toolbar button to the left of it (bookshelf button with 4 "books") and continue to use Firefox as always; IOW, I ignore the "new stuff".

That said, the new Toolbar button for the Bookmarks / History /Synced Tabs Sidebar does remember the last setting; so if I close the Bookmarks Sidebar using the X in that sidebar the next time I use the Toolbar Button the Bookmarks Sidebar opens. Same holds true for the History and Synced Tabs Sidebar, when I close either of those the next time I use that Toolbar button that is what opens. And should I close Firefox with any of those 3 Sidebars open, the one that was opened will appear the next time I open Firefox. IMO, a changed or added feature that is complete in and of its self once the user understands how it works.

Similar to the changes in Firefox 4.0 (March 2011) with the Orange Firefox button UI in place of the Menu Bar, with Firefox 29 Australis UI in April 2014, and now with the Quantum UI in Nov 2017; all major changes with the User Interface. Many new features added, some changed features, and a few removed.

Hi, and you have found Firefox Volunteer Support as has always been here to help you. Side Bar Bookmarks were never the default in Firefox. But since you like Side Bar Bookmarks it is still there.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

the problem was that the side bar was set to display 'history' and that it took reversing the instructions supplied, then doing them in the right order to get firefox to display an imbeded side bar instead of a floating one, and then getting to select bookmarks to display

i really dont get why this changed in the first place, I dont go over to Mozilla Firefox and change personalised settings on their computer. Is it that it is easier do a bulk update and just overwrite personalised settings? Can't updates be done without that, is it coding, is it something else? what's the reason it happens in the first place?

Hi, your guess would be as good as mine. As Firefox Volunteer Support we are not told the reasons for most things.

Am glad you figured out how to reverse my answer. If you could please Mark Your Answer as the Solution so others can find it.
