You might also double-check that you haven't acquired any annoying add-ons. Either:

  • Command+Shift+a (Windows: Ctrl+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions. Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any system extensions that Firefox installs on its own are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything suspicious -- or social? If in doubt, if you do not recall installing or why, disable or remove.

Any improvement?

I've been having the same problem on a stock message board exactly like the problem described in this archived post:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/952337

"Whenever I select text of a webpage a floating social media bar (share FB, G+, Twitter and Gmail) appears over the text - it's a distraction and I want rid of it. Any clues? "

Solution in that case was a bad extension, but that's not the case for me. I just resolved it, but it took a bit of work - you need to have AdblockPlus with the Element Hiding Helper for Adblock extension installed. Right click on the offending web page, click on "Inspect element", scroll down in Inspector mode until you find something like "floating sidebar", or "text drag left" - forget the exact string, but underneath you'll also find the references to resources like google, facebook, twitter, etc. - here's the tricky part that evaded me for a while:

In the upper left side of the Inspector display there is a tiny AdblockPlus icon, very hard to see - while highlighting the offending code, click on that icon and it will bring up the Element Hiding Helper dialog box that lets you create a custom rule to hide that $%&# floating sidebar, my rule looks like this:

investorshub.advfn.com###sideDragLeft

Voila - problem solved! One other thing I'd like to mention - adding Fanboy's Annoyances blocklist to Adblock did *not* resolve the floating social media sidebar issue as some other threads here suggest would work, you have to hide the element with a custom rule in your browser.

I have the problem, but installing AdBlock did not resolve the problem. There are so many outdated "solutions" on the Support Forum that one spends a lot of wasted time. Solutions that call for clicking on the "Wrench" are great when the wrench is no longer in the current version of Firefox. The media share bar does not appear on every website, so I assume there is perhaps something in the page's script that brings up the bar. Anyone know if there is a solution?

Hi mcclenaghan, there is no built-in feature that specifically targets sharing buttons.

The "Tracking Protection" feature may block many of them, but also may block content you want to see, so it's not a very targeted solution. More info: What happened to Tracking Protection?.

So an extension which removes unwanted elements would be your best bet. AdBlock Plus may require a filter setting to do the job. Did you check their forum? https://adblockplus.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=1
