I noticed that my searchbar is gone. Well, not gone, just missing,. When I go to the page where I can customize firefox, I can see it there, and I can move it around. But when I go back to normal viewing its gone. I can't even see it in the three bar menu if I move it there. Please help, I want my little buddy back!

You probably did receive the TAARExperiment extension as part of a Mozilla Shield study. You can disable this extension to op-out of this experiment.

Hi  !

You may already have done this, but just to make sure :

In 'Customize': did you click on 'Restore Defaults'  ?

Yeah, I clicked on restore defaults. No dice.

I mean, I can very clearly see it on the customize page, its right there, but when I switch back to normal it vanishes. I can move it, but no matter where I put it its gone. Even if I put it in the three bar menu its gone.

Just thought of something :

When you say 'search bar' : you're not talking about the search box next to the address bar, are you  ? Cause if you are, would you take a look at this thread :

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1149921

Yeah, that is what I am talking about. And I did all that and it doesn't work.

Its weird because when I start up firefox, I can see it there for a second, but then it immediately disappears. Its as though something is blocking me from seeing it. But I can't tell what it might be.

Can you attach a screenshot that shows this bar in customization made?

Certainly. Here they are side by side.

As you can see, Its t here in the customize page, but when I go back tot he main page it vanishes. I can move it around, but it doesn't matter where it is. even putting it in the three bar menu doesn't make it appear.

Hmm, the respective widths of the address bar and search bar are stored in a settings file that occasionally get irrational values in it. I thought "Restore defaults" would clear that up, but you might need to do it by hand. If you want to try that:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" button. This should launch a new window listing various files and folders in Windows Explorer.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename xulstore.json to something like OLDxulstore.json. If you see a file named localstore.rdf, rename that one to OLDlocalstore.rdf.

Start Firefox back up again. Is the search bar visible?

This process hides the Menu Bar and Bookmarks Toolbar. To turn different bars on and off, you can use any of these methods to show the toolbar list and select the desired bars there:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank spot on the tab bar (or the "+" button)
  • (menu bar) View > Toolbars
On Windows, tap the Alt key to activate the menu bar temporarily.
  • in Customize mode > Show/Hide Toolbars (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)

To turn on the Bookmarks Toolbar, Menu Bar, or other bars, click it on the list.

I tried that, sadly still did not work.

Let's try Firefox in Safe Mode : If Firefox is not running : Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. If Firefox is running : 3-bar menu => ' ? ' (at the bottom of the dropdown) => 'Restart with Add-ons disabled'. Then OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click 'Start in Safe Mode' ( not 'Refresh' !)

Okay, disabled the shield study and my searchbar is back. Thank you very much.
