Sometimes it gets lost on a crowded page, and I have to hunt for it, slowing things down.

Chosen solution

To create those preferences:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste caret and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Switch back to this tab, and select and copy the following preference name:

ui.caretWidth

(4) Switch back to about:config, right-click a blank area of the editor, choose New, then Integer. Paste the preference name and click OK, then type a value you want to try out, such as 3 and click OK

(5) Click in an editable area and assess whether you like that width. Larger values tend to hide the left side of a character when the cursor is between two characters, but may nevertheless work for you.

If you need to edit the width: double-click the ui.caretWidth and enter a different number and click OK, etc.

If you want to edit the blink time, repeat steps 3-5 for the other preference cor-el mentioned: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1174665#answer-1004538

You can create these two integer prefs on the about:config page:

  • ui.caretWidth (i)
  • ui.caretBlinkTime (milliseconds;use 0 to disable blink)

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Thanks, but neither "ui.caret" entry was on my list.

Note that Firefox allows to customize how spelling errors are displayed to make it easier to spot errors.

There are a lot of these Look-and-Feel prefs supported that may not exist by default and if necessary need to be created via the right-click context menu on the about:config page with the correct type.
