Firefox is causing legitimate (government-State of Michigan) websites to return "information cannot be verified" message when renewing licenses - operator, or vehicle. I can renew online at Michigan's Express SOS site if I use ANY OTHER BROWSER than Firefox. This makes me extremely irritated -- I now think, additionally, that it has been affecting my online banking as well. I do not get any sensible error messages. I only get stuff like "information cannot be verified" and a full stop to any further attempts to conduct any kind of business. On some financial sites, the browser just sits there while I keep on pushing the "Next" button and NOTHING happens. Now some of these government and banking sites may be using Java or something Firefox disapproves of, but rendering the site inoperable with no explanation is NOT the way to handle the problem, especially when other browsers can open the site. So, respectfully, what am I missing here that I ought to be doing?

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

  • Clear the Cache and
  • Remove Cookies

Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to. You may also lose any settings for that website.

Type about:preferences<enter> in the address bar.

  • Cookies; Select Privacy. Under History, select

Firefox will Use Custom Settings. Press the button on the right side called Show Cookies. Use the search bar to look for the site. Note; There may be more than one entry. Remove All of them.

  • Cache; Select Advanced > Network. Across from

Cached Web Content, Press Clear Now.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). While you are in safe mode;

Type about:preferences#advanced<enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Then restart. Poke around safe websites. Are there any problems?

OK-thanks! I'm going to try this in the next few minutes. It sounds like it might solve the problem. I'll let you know. Thanks again.

To Cor-el: Thanks for replying! I have Kaspersky Internet Security.

However, the problem does not occur when I use Chrome or Edge. Initially when this occurred I just worked around it by going in person to the Secretary of State's offices, or directly to the bank, or I changed browsers from Firefox to whatever else was on my system.

(I read through the link you supplied, but I've only once encountered the error message triggered by a certificate that Firefox didn't recognize as legitimate. I just left the site, and conducted my business by telephone, believing that if Firefox thought the site certificate suspicious, then I did not want to use that site until the certificate was updated/corrected.)

What bugged me about what I was seeing is that the error message was that "your information cannot be verified", which I thought was from the State of Michigan's site, or in the case of a Bank of America credit card site, the page simply sat there and would not move when the "next" button was clicked. For that occurrence, I moved to Chrome and there was no problem with clicking on the "next" button. Also true of the State of Michigan site -- I changed browsers and my information and the transaction progressed normally.

Since I prefer Firefox, I wanted to correct whatever setting on my computer was causing a problem.

To FredMcD: Thanks for the solution involving clearing the cache and removing cookies. Followed your advice, then I saw a comment from "John99", so I followed that also, rebooted, and so far, everything seems to be working okay. Thank you very much for your help!

To John99: Thank you! I did see the section about Kaspersky, but I just couldn't believe it would only be active on Firefox and not Chrome or Edge. Nevertheless, I changed the setting according to your directions, rebooted, and so far the problem seems to have been alleviated. Thank you again!

Glad to help. Safe Surfing.
