How to enable automatic updates?
My Firefox won't update automatically anymore. Even if I check on Help --> About Firefox, it runs for a while and then it says it is updated. I have another FF installation on my work laptop, and it correctly picks up updates, this version on pc doesn't.
Please, I have already tried manually updating to the latest firefox a few weeks ago: I am now running version 42 here. Yet, today my work pc got updated to 43.0.2, and this one doesn't.
I would not like to completely remove FF in order not to loose my add-ons, could you please guide me to reinstate normal auto-update feature?
Thanks
Chosen solution
Hello everyone, I have solved it!!! Roaming through the options I found this one:
app.update.url.override
which sounded immediately good. Its value was custom, and it was:
Though it seemed legitimate to me, I tried resetting it to standard, and as soon as I did, FF started downloading updates!!!

Hi, please see - Advanced panel - Accessibility, browsing, network, updates, and other advanced settings in Firefox, and look at the Update tab.
That should work, but if you still have a problem with it, try Firefox Safe Mode to see if it goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
- Click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
- On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
- On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
- On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".
If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.
To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.
When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem. Thank you!
Hello Scribe,
I have checked the update tab, and it is exactly as it is showed in the help page. I can not test the other suggestion because meanwhile I have updated manually once again and I am now on par, HOWEVER:
- In the update tab I suppose I should be able to see the update history clicking the pushbutton; I did, but there was no history (and now I am on FF 43.0.2, so at least I have updated manually once). - If I restart in safe mode, and look for update history, again I do not see any update
I don't know if this can mean that the issue is in the "core" and not on any extension?
Also: if I download FF 42 or older version and re-install on top of FF 43, will it downgrade? I ask because I would like to help testing my issue. Please let me know if downgrading is suitable and might help. Otherwise I am afraid I will be stuck with this problem at next FF update.
Thanks
Hello again. I did. I went back to FF 42.0.
I tried checking for updates both starting in normal mode and re-starting in safe mode. It never finds any update. It seems it's not a problem of add-ons
Could you please help?
could you go to the firefox menu ≡ > help ? > troubleshooting information, copy the contents of that page and paste them here into a reply on the forum? this might give us a clue what is going on...

thank you, can you try to enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server - right-click and reset that entry to the default value.

Fred, that's where I downloaded the new versions. I don't want to know where to download the latest Firefox, I want Firefox to recognize when there is a new version and update itself. Apparently here it is not working

Done, it is now 6, but nothing else changed as far as updates are concerned...
Some of your crash reports weren’t sent to the Mozilla Servers.
In the address bar, type about:crashes<enter>. Note: If any reports do not have BP in front of the numbers/letters, click it to submit them.
The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.
Using your mouse, mark the most resent 7 - 10 crash reports, and copy them. Now go to the reply box below and paste them in.
I am not sure I understood. I submitted all most recent crashes, and here is now how it looks:

Thanks, but I have already gone through all of them. FF is configured to update automatically, there is no user.js in the profile directory, and I have already tried to re-install an updated version automatically. None of this worked. :(

I am sorry Fred, is this one that I quote your suggestion? Regarding my graphics drivers: they are constantly updated through GEForce experience, it is many months that I have this problems and I have even changed graphic card meanwhile. I don't think gfx drivers are related to this. I have checked integrity of the system, and no integrity violation has been found
hi, i'd also recommend a clean reinstall:
- download the full firefox setup file from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
- uninstall firefox on the machine
- manually delete all remaining files in the firefox program folder, which usually resides in C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\ (this is the important bit)
- reinstall firefox
Will this uninstall all the installed add-ons? What about the favorites?
Because if possible, I would really prefer to avoid this...
