Firefox crashes 3-5 times a day

My firefox is crashing constantly. I have tried SAFE MODE, the disabling Flash, etc. What everyone suggests and nothing seems to work. It's so frustrating as I need 2 different browsers to get through my work day on different sites, etc.

Can you be of assistance?

Sorry to hear about the crashes. If you are getting the Mozilla Crash Reporter form, your Firefox may have logged some data that would help track down the cause of the problem. You can submit that data to Mozilla and share it with forum volunteers to see whether it points to the solution. Please check the support article "Firefox crashes - asking for support" for steps to get those crash report IDs from the about:crashes page, and then post some of the recent ones here.

If you have a problem with Firefox freezing or "Not Responding" and then you have to "kill" Firefox using Task Manager, you won't have reports for those. This article has suggestions for that scenario: Firefox hangs or is not responding - How to fix.

Everytime It happens I send the Crash Reporter - report to Mozilla. It's been happening for over a year now and just recently it has gone up to 3-5 times per day. I always send the Crash Report. I always provide my email address for someone to contact me but no one ever has. Forgive my extreme frustration. :-/

Thank you for the reports. This is a little all over the place, so I'm having trouble spotting the common thread. Starting from the last two, then the previous six:

js::GCMarker::traverseEdge<T> -- seems to be related to memory cleaning ("garbage collection"), follows nsXPConnect::NotifyDidPaint()

XPCJSRuntime::~XPCJSRuntime -- seems to be related to memory cleaning ("cycle collector")

There may be something unusual about your system that Firefox is not prepared for. Can you think of any software you run that sandboxes browsers, randomizes memory, does intrusion detection (IDS) or anything else that could affect Firefox's ability to interact with memory?

Since you already have tried Firefox's Safe Mode, I would suggest the following next:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 41.0.2 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Rename just the current program folder, either:

(64-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

(32-bit Windows folder names)

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

to

C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Does Firefox work more normally?

Note: Some plugins may exist only in that OldFirefox folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:

  • \OldFirefox\Plugins
  • \OldFirefox\browser\plugins

Otherwise, there's no reason to keep the old folder except research/curiosity.

OK, I just performed the "Clean Reinstall". I'll report back how it goes over the next few days.

Thank you for your guidance. It's been so frustrating. I've been using IE now for my personal Email since Firefox was crashing so much.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.

You can check if there is an update for your graphics display driver and check for hardware acceleration related issues.

You can check for issues caused by plugins and set plugins to "Ask to Activate" on the "Firefox menu button/Tools > Add-ons > Plugins" page.


Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

These seems to be along the same lines. To try to rule out a problem with other settings, could you do this three-minute experiment:

Create a new Firefox profile

A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.

Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):

firefox.exe -P

Don't delete anything here!

Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.

Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like TEST-42, and skip the option to relocate the profile folder. After creating the profile, select it and start Firefox in that profile.

Any difference in stability?

When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

I'm not sure of the significance, as it could be unrelated to the crashing, but 3 of the 4 reports mention:

I just tried starting in "Safe Mode" & it crashes in Safe Mode as well. :-/ So frustrating.

Here's all the crashes, just from today:

I just tried starting in "Safe Mode" & it crashes in Safe Mode as well. :-/ So frustrating. The good news is, in Safe Mode, the "GraphicsCriticalError" goes away (the 3 latest reports). The bad news is, that's obviously not the root of the problem.

I don't think I can help any further. Your Firefox appears to be performing routine activities such as memory allocation and deallocation and getting slapped down by Windows. We've gone over the obvious things --

  • Minimize the influence of hardware acceleration, script compilers, and extensions by testing in Safe Mode
  • Minimize the influence of malware by running a full battery of scanners
  • Minimize the influence of program files using a Clean Reinstall
  • Minimize the influence of settings by using a new profile

There seems to be something about your Windows that is out of the ordinary. I suppose it is worth asking whether you use EMET or other security software that Firefox isn't routinely tested against.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that helps.

You can also do a RAM test to check for bad memory.
