Should I uninstall windows internet explorer in lieu of firefox?

I am still using XP. I've been using Firefox for nearly a year and have no need for Windows Internet Explorer. Can or should I uninstall it? I realize some programs are dependent on it... but it's removed will Firefox be able to provide that support?
