For whatever reason all of my bookmarks are gone. Can you help me recover them?

Chosen solution

Thanks anyway but i found what i wanted in - "bookmarks" in the FireFox menu at the top of the page - then go to - "show all bookmarks", then "import and backup" on the new page, then "restore". I simply selected today's date and the bookmarks were back again. Its actually quite simple once you figure it out. To bad i could not find these directions in the help. Hopefully this post will help someone else in the future.

Sorry to hear about that. If you check on the Bookmarks Menu, either:

  • the button on the toolbar that drops down the menu
  • on the classic menu bar, Bookmarks

you can expand the Bookmarks Toolbar folder there to see whether the bookmarks are still stored in Firefox. Are they there? If not, we'll come back to that problem.

The Bookmarks Toolbar needs to have an item named "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" in order to show your bookmarks there. For best results, position it at the left end of the bar (i.e., don't put other buttons to the left of it). Sometimes this disappears from the bar or, when customized to a different location, stops working. I suggest using the Customize feature to reset your toolbars. This article describes how to call up Customize, and then at the bottom of that tab, there is a "Restore Defaults" button which should put the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" back where they belong: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.

Any luck?

Hi cd1515, is this on your Mac?

So you confirmed that these both check out okay:

  • Bookmarks Toolbar Items is in the correct location on the Bookmarks Toolbar in Customize mode
  • The bookmarks on the Bookmarks Toolbar are still there according to the other places you can view them (Bookmarks menu, Bookmarks sidebar, Library dialog AKA "Show All Bookmarks")

Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the option key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any difference?
