I have used Firefox for years and lately have ran into a problem. On start-up is always displays a bar across the bottom of the screen asking if it may report the Data Settings under the Advanced Options. In addition, I cannot change the History setting, allowing Firefox to track my history. Or allow the tracking of Third Party Cookies. Any changes I make in the settings will not take hold, and I get the same results after each try. In addition... isn't there a button to click on to "Save" any changes. None on my screen, so I only assume it auto changes on exit and re-start. ???

After resolving that issue...

A few others users have said that some aspects of the new "in tab" preferences page do not work for them.

As a diagnostic, if you don't mind, could you test the Options page in Firefox's Safe Mode? This will help assess whether this problem is caused by one of your extensions. Here's how:

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement with the in-tab Options?

Or you might need to switch back to the old pop-up style Options dialog. Here's how:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button promising to be careful.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste pref and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.preferences.inContent preference to switch it from true to false

(Note: I don't know whether the old dialog will be in Firefox forever or is a transitional feature. As you've probably noticed, the long-term trend is to remove things that pop up.)

Does that make any difference?

This could be a side effect of Advanced SystemCare's Surfing Protection feature: it tends to roll back your settings changes between Firefox sessions. While this is to protect you from unwanted changes, it also prevents you from making wanted changes. Try disabling that in ASC's settings, and also the extension it adds to Firefox, at least until all your settings are to your liking.

Other possible reasons that settings changes do not stick: How to fix preferences that won't save.

And, yes, it is odd not to have Save and Cancel on the new "in-tab" preferences pages. I sometimes play around and would prefer to have a Cancel button rather than actually making and undoing changes...

Thank you so much for your help. Although restarting in Safe Mode and making the changes did not take hold (still no button to click for Save or Cancel). I did get to the Refresh Option and did that. It cleared it all but I was able to restore everything in a short period of time. In the end I did change the settings to have the old structure of having Tabs and make my changes now where I can say Save or Cancel. The browser works much faster now too.

Also, you did see ASC as a possible problem to my issue, however I had completely uninstalled that program, rebooted, and still had the same issues prior to writing you about it. I do not think ASC was a player in this problem. Thanks Again!
