Chosen solution

Linda,

As long as you can verify that you only have one version of Firefox installed in Program Files [as cor-el mentioned here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1039127#answer-671474 ] where he mentioned "orphaned entries", I don't think you should worry about Add / Remove Programs showing multiple versions of Firefox. That's a Windows Registry error with WinXP that has been happening for many years; more than likely it happens when a 2nd version is installed, instead of the user having done an actual update of Firefox. Personally, I have 4 real old versions still showing - 2.0.0.20, 3.0.19, 3.5.19, and 3.6.28 which were all installed while I had other versions also installed. Plus, the two newer versions - 6.0 and 29.0 that I did install and do updates with don't appear. IMO, there were some problems with WinXP and Firefox which seem to have lessened very greatly or have been eliminated in later versions of Windows, at least for Firefox.

Not a day goes by that "we" don't see a user posting here with Win7 who has multiple versions of Adobe Flash installed, at least as far as their Installed Plugins Registry entries are concerned - and that can create problems for Firefox users because the actual Plugin files are still where they were first installed and can cause problems [unlike just an "orphaned entry" that WinXP didn't clean out]. And based upon what I have seen myself with WinXP that may happen every time Adobe Flash is updated, even with later versions of Windows. So I can't update Flash, I need to use the Adobe Flash uninstaller and then install the new version of Flash.

Overall IMO, don't worry about Add / Remove showing multiple versions of Firefox - it shouldn't affect Firefox as long as the older Program Files are gone.

Normally when Firefox updates to the latest version, it doesn't leave old versions behind. Whatever the cause, you can safely remove the older version of Firefox. 34.0.5 is currently the latest (stable) version.

more options

That is to say, remove Version 33.1

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

Do you see two Firefox program folders?

If there are multiple versions of Firefox in "Control Panel > Programs" present then it is possible that you only see orphaned Firefox entries from older versions and that only the current release is really installed. This can happen if the Firefox updater didn't remove the entry of the previous version, but merely added an entry for the new version. If you uninstall such older versions that are actually no longer present then you will likely uninstall the current Firefox version and you will have to reinstall Firefox.

SOLVED !

'Thank you everyone for your VERY helpful responses. Went to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Saw both versions of Firefox. Clicked on 33.1 and removed it and BOTH were deleted! Double-checked and went to "Program Files" and opened Mozilla Firefox folder. Folder had only 3 things inside, and 2 were text things I sent to myself for notes. Anyway, just downloaded Firefox 34.0.5 and reinstalled it.

Oh, while doing this I encountered another problem. WINDOWS INSTALLER has been popping up time and again and I can't get rid of it. So I found the thing I had saved for WINDOWS INSTALLER and installed it again.

Again, thank you for solving my problem. The rest of my life should be as easy as this fix! ... HEALTHY happy New Year Everyone.

If I'm replying to your question in the correct place, sorry. First time I'm doing this. Anyway , here's the post that answered my question:

"Normally when Firefox updates to the latest version, it doesn't leave old versions behind. Whatever the cause, you can safely remove the older version of Firefox. 34.0.5 is currently the latest (stable) version." BY ?? (woops, the other posts aren't showing here!) It was a direct, simple to understand instruction.

Also helpful was person who DIRECTED me how to do this: Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, etc.

Someone wrote about an orphan. Huh? Clueless what this word "orphan" means concerning computers. I'll include this word with "command prompt". Sooner or later I'll learn!

Next I must figure out why the pictures are not showing on Firefox when I read local paper, or the word "search" and sometimes the box. Had this problem BEFORE the first one.

more options

Orphaned would mean that this entry should have been removed when updating the program because there is no longer a real connection to an existing program, i.e. the parent is gone and has been replaced by a later Firefox release and now both entries point to the same updated program. This can happen if you download the full version on the next release and do not uninstall the current version or if an update fails or for other (unknown) reasons.

Your explanation is much appreciated, cor-el, and understood. I'll cross this off my "Question" list. ... On another note, just noticed the icon for my name is a cat. WOW! I love cats! 2 own me. Thank you to whoever did this.

Am back again. Seems like FF 34.0.5 version really messed up my 'puter. Have been trying to fix the mess since 10AM and now it's 2:30pm. Had to FULLY remove FF (both versions, 33.1 and 34.0.5) and then to re-install 33.1 was oh so time consuming, what with locating it on google then installing it.

THEN to find this forum was near to impossible! This time I just sent myself the link to find the place again.

Just ignore this posting everyone. Am venting. Am exhausted. I will stay with FF 33.1 to make my life easier. 15-0102

I do not know how to put this link on my desktop. Am guessing the "desktop" is my monitor/screen.

Fred, thank you for your help, but I think the mess I've created with FF is beyond redemption at this point. Fiddled with settings and now I have at the bottom of my screen "Scripts Currently Forbidden <SCRIPT> and to the far right is Options with an x next to it. Goodness gracious, am absolutely clueless what "script" is!

At the least, I got my FF 33.1 back!

WORST of it all is that the little gray circle at the top of my screen when I'm in firefox spins counter clockwise. Trying hard to learn what this is, to no avail. I won't trouble you, or anyone else, again. This Fire Fox dilemma has consumed my entire day. -- Linda

Linda, that's a nice name.

When the circle is going clockwise, it means the system is sending data to the browser. Counter clockwise means the browser is doing the sending.

The desktop, is what your computer displays when it is running. If you are running a program, it goes on top of the desktop. Even if you don't see it, it is always there. Most have links to programs or shortcuts to documents on their system, or to internet services.

If you are on a web page, and you want to save that page / site, there are several things you can do.

  • 1 Create a bookmark
The bookmark goes into your Bookmarks Manager, and will remain there until it is removed. The user can create folders in the Manager so as to sort them in a manor they like. Examples; Banks, Stores, Clubs . . . .

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/create-bookmarks-save-your-favorite-webpages https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/bookmark-folders-organize-your-bookmarks

  • 2 Create a shortcut
Shortcuts are just bookmarks that are placed in the computer. The can be placed in folders just like the Manager, or even on the desktop. They can be temporary, or permanent.

    If you want to place a shortcut on the desktop;
mouse to the address bar over the icon. Hold down the left mouse, and move the mouse to an empty area on the desktop. Then let go.

Happy Monday, Fred. Thank you for explanation of grey circular thingy and what it does. Have since learned it's called a "spinner". Regardless, now that I'm back with FF 33.1 the spinner goes counter clockwise and then I get a popup that reads something like "Page Unavailable" or "Cannot connect". Just happened. ... just got a popup to update FF. Gotta go.

Tried the above and it didn't work for me. Put the mouse curser on the address and held down the LEFT mouse and nothing happened. So I COPIED the link, closed this page, and went to my desktop (monitor/ screen)? Tried to PASTE it so it would be with all the other icons and it didn't work. ... and so you know, I have never used "bookmarks" because I'm not familiar with the things. I maintain an email sent to myself that contains all the web sites I visit, like local newspapers, my spam thingy, etc. So when I want to visit someplace I open my email and click on the blue line. Easy!

So what I did was click the little envelope on the FF taskbar and sent myself the link. Maybe this will work.

To everyone, and very helpful Fred ( ! ) please accept my apologies for including on this thread a multitude of other problems I'm contending with. Unfortunately my problems seem to have begun when I updated FF.

Hi Linda, I will let Fred continue helping you, but he may not be around at the moment, so I will jump in with an answer.

Did to you try to read the two articles Fred mentioned ?

The above blue writing are of course links.

Using Firefox's bookmarks should be a lot better and easier than a list of links in an email, especially once the list starts to get long. Bookmarks also help improve how the address bar behaves. See also

As for dragging shortcuts to the desktop, maybe you tried the wrong icon. The icon you need to drag; on this page for instance is the green padlock. It is whatever is at the far left of the | address | location | awesome | bar {alternative names but where you enter web page addresses)

It really is going to be a good idea to update Firefox again Fx35 will be out soon

Whatever your problem I doubt it is due to using Fx35 and may well have been resolved because unknown to you a new profile was created. I am sure Fred will help with that. If not I suggest you ask a new question about being stuck on firefox 33.

  • Use /questions/new/desktop
(This one is marked solved, and you now have a slightly different problem)
And try to use the troubleshooter addon that appears as you ask the question.

I'm back to square one fellas. I had deleted BOTH versions of Firefox and then re-installed version 3.1. Just looked in iobit uninstaller program and Firefox version 34.0.5 (x86 en-us) appears.

Yesterday, from 10:45am until 5:45pm tried to fix the pickle I'm in. Today 'puter is slower than paint drying. I must have messed up something else. However, I DID try to post another question somewhere else on this forum and couldn't find where to put it. Can someone please post the link for the place to include NEW questions. I don't want anyone to think I'm abusive and putting (all) my problems in the same thread.

Thank you for being understanding. -- Linda

Note that counter clockwise means that Firefox is setting up the connection to the server. Once a connection is established the spinner will rotate clockwise and Firefox will wait until all data has arrived.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
