This non-computer savvy senior citizen female is trying to clean up my Dell laptop (windows XP SP3) for the new year. What trash I've accumulated! Anyway, noticed I have 2 versions of Firefox. Version 33.1 is 79.58MB and version 34.0.5 has 84.4MB. Can I delete from my computer the older version? ... If someone answers this, please explain in simple language! ... Thank you in advance. ... HEALTHY New Year to everyone!

Linda,

As long as you can verify that you only have one version of Firefox installed in Program Files [as cor-el mentioned here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1039127#answer-671474 ] where he mentioned "orphaned entries", I don't think you should worry about Add / Remove Programs showing multiple versions of Firefox. That's a Windows Registry error with WinXP that has been happening for many years; more than likely it happens when a 2nd version is installed, instead of the user having done an actual update of Firefox. Personally, I have 4 real old versions still showing - 2.0.0.20, 3.0.19, 3.5.19, and 3.6.28 which were all installed while I had other versions also installed. Plus, the two newer versions - 6.0 and 29.0 that I did install and do updates with don't appear. IMO, there were some problems with WinXP and Firefox which seem to have lessened very greatly or have been eliminated in later versions of Windows, at least for Firefox.

Not a day goes by that "we" don't see a user posting here with Win7 who has multiple versions of Adobe Flash installed, at least as far as their Installed Plugins Registry entries are concerned - and that can create problems for Firefox users because the actual Plugin files are still where they were first installed and can cause problems [unlike just an "orphaned entry" that WinXP didn't clean out]. And based upon what I have seen myself with WinXP that may happen every time Adobe Flash is updated, even with later versions of Windows. So I can't update Flash, I need to use the Adobe Flash uninstaller and then install the new version of Flash.

Overall IMO, don't worry about Add / Remove showing multiple versions of Firefox - it shouldn't affect Firefox as long as the older Program Files are gone.

I'm back to square one fellas. I had deleted BOTH versions of Firefox and then re-installed version 3.1. Just looked in iobit uninstaller program and Firefox version 34.0.5 (x86 en-us) appears. <snip>
link for the place to include NEW questions. I don't want anyone to think I'm abusive and putting (all) my problems in the same thread. Thank you for being understanding. -- Linda

It should not be necessary to use any utility such as iobit uninstaller to uninstall Firefox. There is potentially a possibility that it could cause data loss, probably not too much concern to you right now, but a problem for anyone who has heavily used and come to rely on Firefox with its bookmarks and maybe login passwords.

I posted a link upthread for asking new questions
If not I suggest you ask a new question about being stuck on firefox 33.

Use /questions/new/desktop

Lets hope the malware scans work, they can be rather time consuming but at least it's just a case of sitting back while they get to work,

Good Luck, John

Linda, At present I do not see any other questions from you.

You may be reading them from emails note you may read them on the forum using link /questions/1039127. They are spread over two pages. (2nd)

Maybe you asked a separate question on some other forum.

Me again with same problem. Firefox was giving me problems so decided to (again) start anew. Removed from my 'puter 2 versions of FireFox. Removal went fine. Then I downloaded what I seemed to be 34.0.5 and installed it. Long story short, when I now check what software I have with WinUtilities is shows the following THREE versions of Firefox: 31.0 (x86 en-US), 32.02 (x86 en-US) and 33.1.1 (x86 en-US). Each is about the same size, 70.44Mb to 78.45Mb. These THREE versions also show up in MS Add/Remove Programs.

Cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestion/advice would be much appreciated. Forgot to mention I did spyware check, virus check, adware, and everything else possible that I have on this thing. Nothing bad showed up.

Using Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with Windows XP SP3.

Hi Linda,

The problems with Firefox we can try to help with.

The problems with installing or uninstalling not going correctly are possibly more of a Windows problem than anything else. It is probably better to ask about multiple copies showing up in a Windows forum. Others may know a good Windows XP forum. Personally I no longer use XP much, although I do again have a machine working with Windows XP on it. I will ping someone who does use XP. I am not sure which forum you could ask on but possibly it would be worth giving it a go on

Not sure what WinUtilities is possibly third party software,

The the iobit software mentioned upthread will also be third party. Possibly some of this software interacts badly or may no longer support Windows XP well.

It may be better and simpler just to stick to using the Windows native (built in) software: The Control Panel

I have at least temporarily unmarked your chosen solution as your problems have re-emerged.

Sorry I am unable to suggest a fix. Let's hope someone else can.

Test (Please ignore this Lind). pasted https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1039127#answer-673493 permalink from page 1 #673493
there was a forum bug I am checking out
Possibly it was fixed. Possibly quote is still wrong as first link ok 2nd link incorrect.

Big hugs to all of you who have tried to help solve my problem of having multiple versions of Firefox on my 'puter. Tried 95% of your suggestions but keep getting back a few different versions. Have saved to disk everything here to again review it. However, will take Ed's words as solving my problem -- "Don't worry about Add/Remove showing multiple versions of Firefox ..." I will try to get it out of my mind!

Ed also wrote: "... it shouldn't affect Firefox as long as the older Program Files are gone." Sorry, fellas, I have no idea what the older Program Files are or if they're gone."

Y'all tried to help, and I tried to do what was suggested, to no avail. Yesterday I changed a few setting on my Firefox profile here and today got a "gazillion" notifications about things I am clueless about. So today I unchecked all the boxes. What I'm saying is this: Consider my problem solved, for all intents and purposes. All this is far too confusing for me. End of story.

... Again, thank you Fred, John, corel, Ed, etc. -- Linda
