Corrupted "profile" information...how to correct?

I believe sometime after late September, when I installed IOBit ASC7/8 (Advanced System Care), and had that software tweak FF for performance, my "PROFILE" information became corrupted.

Not knowing the DSECT (mainframe assembly language term) info about "PROFILE", I need your help.

I have uninstalled/installed FF 3X and the problem persists (homepage misaligned; yahoo mail totally useless). I have screen prints to illustrate the problem.

I would appreciate contact so that I may send back the screen prints to help Mozilla understand my plight and maybe get things back to normal working order.

Thanks in advance....

Rudy

Hi Jscher2000

Problem solved!

FF 33.1 arrived earlier this week AND the reset function worked "as advertised".

The lower levels of FF prior to 33.1 did not fare too well; moot point as I'm back in the sadle.

Thanks for your efforts; appreciated.

Rudy

PS: IOBit ASC8 is gone!

Sorry, you have to reply to your own post to attach screen shots. It's on the "to do" list for the future to allow that in the initial post.

I'm not sure exactly what is wrong in your Firefox profile, but have you considered using the Reset feature? It preserves your bookmarks and tosses your custom settings and add-ons; the details are in this article: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings. An "Old Firefox Data" folder will appear on your desktop; I suggest keeping that around for a few weeks in case you notice something critical missing from your Firefox.

jscher2000:

Yes, I did perform a "reset" to no avail.

Since I have uninstalled/installed FF 3x, it appears that the corruption always returns; that is why I believe

the "profile" dataset is corrupted. My suspicion is IOBit set something incorrectly in the "profile" ds when I

selected FF performance tweaks. They are of little help at this juncture.

I need to know what is the layout of the "profile" ds, what are the defaults, how to preserve my bookmarks (VERY important),

plugins, and extensions. And, what editing tool to use (notepad?)

Thanks...

Reset Firefox -- easily fix most problems

If you're having problems with Firefox, resetting it can help. The reset feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks and open tabs.

I would recommend you only copy the add-ons to the new profile. Any data file you try to copy may have caused the problem you have.

Hi acen01947, thank you for the screen shots. What I see is that those pages are not styled normally, perhaps because Firefox is not loading the style sheets.

So first, if we assume that Advanced SystemCare is always looking over your shoulder and tweaking Firefox the moment it notices that you've reset it, can you deactivate or uninstall it so that is not a factor? ASC has a feature that will roll back changes when you close Firefox (Surfing Protection?), so it can be extremely frustrating to troubleshoot with that program active.

Second, when you do a Reset, Firefox only carries over part of your data and sheds nearly all of your previously set preferences. That is why I do not think that manually tweaking your profile files will be more helpful, at least until we rule out continuing interference by ASC and potential other factors.

(1) Security certificate issues

Have you received any errors in Firefox relating to untrusted site certificates? These can indicate either that Firefox is not fully set up to work with your security software (common problem after a reset if you use Kaspersky, ESET, BitDefender or the new AVAST) or that you might have contracted malware.

As a test, when you're in your Yahoo mailbox on Firefox, such as it is, click the padlock icon in the address bar, then More Information, then View Certificate and check who is listed in the "Issued by" section. I have attached an example for comparison.

(2) Console reload test

In Firefox, when you're in your Yahoo mailbox, open the web console on the bottom of the tab by pressing Ctrl+Shift+k. Above the greeting in the console there is a bar with a Clear button. Click that button, then reload the page (you can click the arrow in the address bar or click a blank part of the page and press Ctrl+Shift+r).

The console should fill with data, including underlined URLs with their status codes on the right (e.g., 200 for successful retrieval, 304 when using a cached version of the page), and a variety of warnings and errors. Ignore the ones with the blue triangle and look for anything that sounds more serious. You should be able to copy/paste the text of the error messages.
