Out of the blue the above site keeps opening ads when I browse and even wipes out a site I'm looking at and replaces it with another ad site (eg. a certain gambling group). I have run windows defender, mcafee, malaware, adclean and JRT (junkware removal tool) none of which pick it up. Pop ups are blocked but still the rubbish comes. I tied the problem to cdncache from the firefox browsing history (though can't be 100% sure of being right cos I'm not over-bright with computers!). Would be grateful for any assistance.

Glad it worked, and thanks for posting back.

The question of how you picked up the adware is as you say probably unanswerable all I can do is make an educated guess.

The malware tips article I linked to includes some tips reminding you to be careful what you install.

The people producing this stuff know it is there to make money but it is often advertised as having some sort of benefit and some people do choose to install it. Potentially Unwanted software is not something that for instance your Anti Virus software picks up because it is not a virus.

Some disreputable sites may omit to advise what is being installed, more often it is an opt in or small print that you do not notice. These sorts of issues tend to snowball once you have one problem you are probably more likely to pick up even more over time.

It is probably some sort of adware. It could be something installed on your computer, or it could be something that is generated mainly from a particular site you happen to use.

Well done: your detective work has identified a server that the popups come from, but you need to work out what webpage or malware uses that.

You have already tried looking for and removing adware try just opening certain groups of pages to see if you can narrow it down to only one or more sites that you have open when this problem occurs.

You did not provide full troubleshooting information when you posted the question. You may have unwanted addons installed. The following linked article is not precisely your problem but is the sort of guide that helps as a tutorial in similar circumstances

  1. See Remove Cdncache1-a.akamaihd.net pop-up ads (Virus Removal Guide)
    http://malwaretips.com/blogs/cdncache1-a-akamaihd-net-removal/
  2. I think you have tried adwcleaner (you mention adclean) if not then try that http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/

(As mentioned in the tutorial)

  1. If necessary run all of these

If you do find any suspicious file or link this is great site for confirming problems

You need to use multiple and up-to-date tools as they will not all pick up the same things.

Thanks John99. That was a great help. Spent all day working through the links then tried again and wow - no interference. I'm really grateful and will keep your e with all the references in case anything similar ever happens again. My question (possibly unanswerable) now is how on earth the problem got there in the first place as I do try to be really careful about what I open and download and why my BT/Mcafee and Windows defender didn't pick it up? Any thoughts? Thanks again (no longer) frustrated123
