jplayer not working after I disabled some plugins
I was doing a little cleanup to attempt to reduce the amount of memory that FF uses and disable some plugins that I do not use. Unfortunately I did not keep a screenshot of the "before" plugins, just the "after" disabled ones. (some were already disabled before and after). screenshot at: http://imgur.com/cDwxVmm
Anyhow, I sometimes listen to www.michaelgraham.com/radio and now I am not able to. THe Play button just shows a little "javascript:" textbox in the lower left corner that does nothing. The source code indicates that the website uses jplayer. I'm not too familiar with that, but I figured it might be time to update my version of Java. So I did. 7.0.7 to 7.0.45 (gulp!) but that didn't help.
I tried reenabling all the plugins but that didn't help. Weirdly, I now can't listen to that radio show in IE either. a jplayer test page demo worked fine for me. The podcasts (.mp3) files play fine.
I can't find a jplayer.swf on my computer. Not sure where it would be. I went to options/Applications and most filetypes showed Quicktime as the app, so I changed any audio-related ones to Always Ask, but that didn't help. I see nothing in that list for MP3.
Anyhow, I think the best thing to do now is to just restore my profile from a previous time from backups. I read that the localstore.rdf file might be corrupted or also just an older sessionstore.js would be needed.
Before I do more damage, any advice on how to best restore my previous audio environment? SHould I just grab the entire profile folder and overwrite the local one? Or are there just key piece(s) that are needed?
ANy idea how these actions could have messed up audio on the PC itself (Windows 7-64) such that IE can't Play that audio either? That's the scarier part of this mess.

Where is Shockwave Flash, the plugin you'll probably use the most for video, and the one that's generally used for SWF files??
If you visit Adobe's test page, does it show Flash running? If not, you might need to reinstall it. (Be careful to uncheck unwanted tag-along software.)
Any luck?
I see an audio tag in the page source that plays a stream for the live broadcast and MP3 files for the podcasts
<audio src="http://198.154.106.102:8498/;stream/1" preload="none" id="jp_audio_0"></audio>
<audio src="http://www.buzzsprout.com/xxxx/xxxxxx-xxxxxx-xxxxxxxx-x-xxxx.mp3" class="mejs-buzz" type="audio/mp3" controls="controls" style="height: 65px; width: 100%;" preload="none">
@jscher2000: Not having Shockwave Flash would explain IE having trouble too. I don't see a test page, but it did confirm I have it installed (You have version 11,4,402,278 installed). Installed Sept 2012 (which is pretty recent for my pace of upgrades!). I suppose I could try upgrading it.
@corel: And where does the stream come from (go to?)? jplayer? which is Java?
I also did youtube test fwiw and all was well there.
I'm not sure but I have a suspicion that there is some big disconnect between filetypes and application. Are those associations in my profile?
Modified
Java isn't used, but links that show the javascript:; placeholder when hovered are actually links that have an onclick event attached to it and this requires JavaScript to be working properly.
To avoid confusion:
Audio tags are played via the built-in HTML5 media player, so that requires windows-media-foundation support on Windows.

Can you otherwise play MP3 files on your computer?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
- Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.
Hi Wendy444, Firefox disables older versions of plugins with known security vulnerabilities, so that could explain the problem with Flash. I think it's worth updating.
To update for IE, it's easiest to visit the download page using IE and let the site's browser detector offer the ActiveX version.
mp3s: when I put that url in FF, it asked me what I wanted to open it with. Itunes was the default and it downloaded it and opened iTunes and played it fine.
When I click on the podcast .mp3 at that website, the mp3 plays embedded in the browser. So my problem seems to be just the streaming via the Play button on that webpage.
I thought Java might be involved with "Play" button "jplayer" code but apparently not. It was an itneresting and worthwhile upgrade anyhow.
I don't know what Windows Media Foundation is. It does not sound familiar. I'll go look around.
Shockwave FLash is enabled. I think I went to upgrade it once before and did not proceed for some reason. I searched my PC under Flash for .swf files and the newest one is before I fiddled around with plugins. :-(
I will upgrade it. I'm sure its well overdue for one. Maybe something got corrupted along the way.
Upgraded SHockwave FLash. No help. Upgraded IE. No help. Windows Update. No help. I tried to do a system restore but it said it was unsuccessful. FF Safe mode still has the problem. I copied over a backed up profile in its entirety -- no help (but thank Goodness I had that -- upgrading Java played havoc with customizations... I couldn't quite get them back the way I had them cause who knows what I tweaked over the years to get it just so.)
Something weird on my system must have gotten messed up. codecs? Mime types/associates? other??? I updated Windows Media Player too in hopes that might clear up possible associations, but no help there either.
Only thing left is to upgrade FF and that's not an option right now. And I have a feeling the problem is PC related now and good chance a new FF wouldn't even help.
sad... :-(
Is Flash working on Adobe's about page or on other sites that use Flash? http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
When you are on the page where Flash isn't working, does a "Lego-like" icon appear in the address bar, to the left of the URL? If so, try clicking that to see whether you need to enable Flash on that site.
Animation flash does show up for me on that About page. I couldn't find any audio test pages, other than the jplayer demo test page I found earlier (and passed). WHen upgrading shockwave player, it was kind of interesting wading through the terminology with flash vs. shockwave vs. adobe vs. macromedia. very confusing.
On the michaelgraham page there is no icon in the address bar. they don't have a favicon -- there is just a default browser favicon. because the audio stream is embedded in the javascript, not much to click on on the website page to access it.
I assume you heard audio from the "Play" button? I should go try on my laptop just to make sure the site is operational. It always has been very reliably.
Hi Wendy444, I never tried the site because you mentioned you were trying to run jplayer.swf, which is Flash media.
When I visit the site, it creates an HTML5 <audio> tag, not a Flash player. When I click Play, the buttons changes to Stop, but after a few seconds it turns back to Play. I don't see an error in Firefox, but when I try connecting through Fiddler (a proxy program that sometimes shows more detail) it shows the server is returning a "502 Connection Failed" error. Same in Google Chrome. This could be a temporary condition with the server.
OMG... that's incredible! All this for that?!?!
I got jplayer from looking at the code:
$(this).jPlayer("setMedia", stream);
and then googled jplayer to see what it was. I thought I picked up somewhere that jplayer had something to do with shockwave. perhaps not. I was googling quite a bit of stuff.
I also see in the code that a server ip address is commented out and there is another one in its place. A migration issue perhaps.
Thanks so much for trying that and figuring it out. I shoulda fired up my laptop first thing to check that possibility.
Maybe it was a tangent... but "Shockwave Flash" was missing from your Plugins list under "More System Details" so probably you would have needed to update that sooner or later anyway.
that list was only my recently disabled plugins. That was a red herring... but look at how quick I was to blame that activity!!! Interesting!
I got lotsa good upgrades in the process so I guess it was a good exercise...
oops... look at how the very first reply suggested the problem! I really wouldn't have thought that would be the case because I've been listening trouble-free for a long while. But thanks for sticking with me!
Oh, sorry I'm confusing things. I see what you mean by More System Details. Is that my active plugin list? too many acronyms. I don't recognize those.
So, I don't have Shockwave Flash? That goes back to my earlier comment about being confused trying to upgrade Shockwave Player because some talk of FlashPlayer and very confusing which is which and which do I need and why?
Hi Wendy444, the More System Details list is from your original post and is not updated dynamically.
You can use my test page to detect your currently active plugins as seen from a website's perspective.

Note that I already wrote above ([/questions/976389#answer-497473]) that the site is using audio tags to play the file.
The live link probably only works during specific hours.
This will likely only works if you have support to play MP3 via the built-in HTML5 media player which may require to install additional software in Windows to support these files.
I was listening to the show today (on another channel) and I heard them say at the very end of the show ..."sorry for the streaming problems". Jeez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We are glad to here that your problem has been solved.
