why when I got an upgrade to the latest Firefox did I lose my favorites line

I have had several favorites on the second line of Firefox and have had them for years. Because of an upgrade that I didn't ask for, Firefox no longer shows any of those favorites. I want to know how to get them back or I will get rid of Firefox and go back to IE.

Sorry to hear about this problem. If you haven't already, please do try exiting Firefox and starting it up again in case it was a temporary glitch.

There are two basic requirements for the bar:

(1) Bookmarks Toolbar displayed (2) "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" placeholder on the bar

You can open the Customize screen (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Customize...
  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank spot on the tab bar (or the "+" button) > Customize
  • (menu bar) View > Toolbars > Customize
    On Windows, tap the Alt key to activate the menu bar temporarily.

There should be a dotted/dashed outline showing the position of the Bookmarks Toolbar. If that is not showing, click the Toolbars button at the bottom of the panel to turn it on.

Then check for the "Bookmarks Toolbar Items" placeholder. Normally:

If that is missing, can you see it on another bar, or down in the box of available controls? If you see it anywhere, move it back to the actual Bookmarks Toolbar.

If you can't see it anywhere, you can try the "Restore Defaults" button at the bottom of the Customize screen. This should return your toolbars to factory layout, plus or minus some add-on buttons.
