Firefox constantly freezing, not responding and playing brief music since changing to windows 10. How do I fix this?

I also noticed that in task manager that "System" as well as several service hosts are using large amounts of memory. How do I fix this problem on Windows 10. It is really annoying having constant freezes until I reopened Firefox. The other internet browsers are all going really slow, so firefox is the only one to use, but the crashes out of the blue are annoying. Sometimes I have to retype a whole email which is so annoying. The only positive is that it doesn't crash so I can open Word and recopy the message.

Before upgrading to Windows 10, did you check to make sure that your system is compatible with Windows 10?

In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

Could you test with two changes:

(1) A common cause of unresponsive script errors is the protected mode feature of the Flash player plugin. That feature has security benefits, but seems to have serious compatibility issues on some systems. You can disable it using the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, find "Shockwave Flash" and click the More link. Then uncheck the box for "Enable Adobe Flash protected mode" and try that for a day to see whether it helps.

(2) Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Use Troubleshoot Mode in Firefox.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement in performance?

If the unexpected music problem continues, can you discover any pattern to it?

For example, some users noticed an issue with one particular site that had a 4th of July theme (lotto.pch.com): there was a bug that caused the music to play in the background when opening the new tab page (with the thumbnails) because Firefox failed to get a thumbnail of the site and would often try again in the background. A fix in Firefox 41 will mute that, but the short term workaround is to delete the problem site from your history or block the site from your new tab page.

If you think the new tab page is involved with your unwanted sound, display that page, then zoom out (hold down Ctrl and press - a few time) until you can see all of the tiles -- usually 15 spots are laid out, and you see as many as will fit as your standard zoom level. If you see any sites whose tile displays as a gray rectangle, that would be a potential culprit. You might make a note of the address(es), then go ahead and click the "X" to block them from the page to see whether that helps.
