I've deleted a file but people can still access it

Someone pasted a link to a PDF on my site on their Facebook page. My boss wasn't happy about the comments appearing there and asked me to delete the PDF from our site. I did this, but the link still worked for the rest of the day. I assume the file was cached somewhere, would it be on Firefox? I have checked with my website hosting service and they don't cache files.

Chosen solution

You can reload web page(s) and bypass the cache to refresh possibly outdated or corrupted files.

  • Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button
  • Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)
  • Press "Command + Shift + R" (Mac)

Google themselves cache some pages for a while. Also popular pages or parts of them are often quoted or copied elsewhere.

Yes Firefox does cache some copies of pages that are visited. As in caches some of what you use, on your own computer. So if someone has already visited a page you posted they may be able to see the cached copy again. Or they may simply have thought it notable enough to have copied it themselves when they first saw it.

That's great, I was just trying to find out where it was cached in case this happens again!

Thanks for the info

Thanks for posting back.

Maybe the information will help in future but unfortunately on this occasion the proverbial horse has bolted.

Now all I need to do is find the stable door...
