I have gone into about:config and was able to modify the browser.newtab.url. I have changed the url to http://www.google.com and clicked 'Ok'. When I click a new tab, I still get the page that has recommended sites on it. When I go back into about:config, the url is still in there. Any suggestions?

It works as expected in safe mode. I'm guessing a reset is in my future? Will I have to get all of my add-ons again?

Thanks for the advise! There was a malicious add-on that had snuck in. Everything was fine once I removed it.

Your System Details List shows: browser.newtab.url: about:home\

I see this extension installed: MySearchDial NewTab

Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize some prefs each time you start Firefox.

The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created it, so normally it wouldn't be there. You can check its content with a plain text editor if you didn't create this file yourself.

The user.js file is read each time you start Firefox and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

The MySearchDial was the issue. I removed it and all is working as expected now. Thanks!
