Latest Java update will not work in Firefox but does in IE
I have followed all the trouble shooting instructions in Firefox and on the Java site but no applications believe that Java is installed in firefox.

hello phillbatts, the java plugin and javascript are two very different things: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Javascript_is_not_Java
if websites report that javascript is disabled, try the following: enter about:config into the firefox address bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up) & search for the preference named javascript.enabled. make sure that it is set to true and else double-click it in order to change its value.
if this doesn't help, please also make sure that you don't have any extensions (like noscript) installed, that might block the execution of javascript or other active content...

Hi phillbatts, what version of Java do you have? You would expect:
Java(TM) Platform SE 7 U51
You can check using either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
- orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins.
If you had a much older version before and recently updated, check at the bottom to see whether it is among the disabled plugins. If you find it there, change the setting from "Never Activate" to your choice of "Ask to Activate" or "Always Activate".
Hi.
The version I have is SE7 U51 10.51.2.13. It is set as ask to activate but Firefox hasn't asked. All sites such as gmail report no javascript installed

That fixed it. Many thanks
Strange that it only happened after an update of Java though
