How do I block web sites from showing up in a search?

I saw discussion on this but it was archived and I could not expand on it.

Specifically, I would like to prevent certain web sites such as About.com from showing up when I do a search since I have never found them useful and don't even want to give them so much attention. These are not sites that I want blocked rather just prevent them from cluttering up a search list.
