How do I prevent specific web sites from showing in a search?
I am so tired of having to sift through lame web sites such as About.Com, EHow.com and WikiHow.com that I just want to block them from my search results. While I am at it, can I find some way to prevent duplication of web sites in the search?
Chosen solution
The old go-to site for scripts is not working any more, you need to use a different address. Rather than give you that one, I have two different sources listed on the page, Greasy Fork and OpenUserJS: http://www.jeffersonscher.com/gm/google-hit-hider/

That would a question for the help desk for whichever search engine you use. Firefox doesn't so searches itself, it as search engines installed to those searches.
For Google, for instance, you could learn to used the advanced search feature. http://www.google.com/advanced_search
Mea Culpa....
What is your preferred search site? I have a userscript that works on Google, DuckDuckGo and Startpage.com.
BlockSite {web link} BlockSite is an extension, which automagically blocks websites of your choice. Additionally, this extension will disable all hyperlinks to these websites, by just displaying the link text without the clicking functionality.
I installed the "Google-Hit-Hider" but see no [block] options. I see the monkey at the top of the screen and the pull down claims it to be installed. I restarted Firefox again.
What might I be doing wrong?
The monkey button is faded, which usually indicates it is temporarily deactivated. Try clicking the button again. When the button regains its full colors, try reloading the page (Ctrl+r) to get the script to run.
Or on that drop-down menu, click Enabled so that a checkmark appears next to it.
Modified
Also, even with the button faded, you should see Google Hit Hider by Domain listed on the drop-down menu. Can you make sure it is enabled on the Add-ons page? Either:
- Ctrl+Shift+a
- "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click User Scripts. Then check to make sure Google Hit Hider is listed and enabled there. If not, please return to Greasy Fork or OpenUserJS and try the installation again.
Ok, One click gives out mascot some color. actually it was not faded before I went through the finger calisthenics to get that screen shot. It is enabled in add-ons. When I clicked on UserScripts, it came back as "You don't have any user scripts installed" and I clicked "Get User Scripts". Then search went to "Connecting..." and eventually to "The connection has timed out" screen. Try again netted "Problem Loading Page".
No problems with the network. It is probably a fire wall thingie....
