How do I widen Bookmarks on new Win7 64-bit laptop? Can't find userChrome file to edit (FF 25.0.1)

more options

I have an edited userChrome.css file that I've taken from one computer to another that has settings like the width of the Bookmarks column in it. In the past, I've just pasted it into the right folder in Profiles, overwriting the old one, but I don't see any "usercrhome.css" anywhere on my C drive. I'm guessing that things are different in FF25 (which I've just upgraded to on this new computer). So now how do I widen the Bookmarks column?

Chosen solution

Don't use CEP Options > Customize thru the Addons Manager, that is for customizing the appearance of the CEP extension - not for editing the the 3 "user" files.

Hit the Alt key to reveal the Menu Bar, then hit Tools. Use the ChromEdit Plus > ChromEdit menu item, and then show the userChrome.css tab. Paste your code in that box and then restart Firefox.

There hasn't been any change to the way the userChrome.css file works.
This file is still located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

Do you mean the minimum width of the drop down of the Bookmarks menu or Bookmarks Menu button?

userChrome.css and the /chrome/ folder doesn't exist until the user creates them. The /chrome/ folder and the example-userChrome.css file were removed from Firefox many versions in the past, and need to be created manually or by using an extension such as ChromeEdit Plus.

cor-el,

Thank you for your reply.

I'm trying to widen the Bookmarks menu so that Bookmarks with longer names will show more (if not all) of each name.

The problem is that I can't find the Chrome folder in the Profile folder. If I could, I'd paste my long-ago edited userChrome.css file in it.

the-edmeister,

Thank you for your reply.

Because of the theme that I was using on my old computer, I hadn't updated FF in a long time (yes, my bad). Now I'm on a new computer with a much newer version of FF. According to your reply, the Chrome folder is no longer automatically included.

I did install ChromeEditPlus 2.9.10, per your suggestion. I did a search I finally found Chrome folders in C:\Users\KB\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\vpykcvo8.default\indexedDB\chrome & C:\Users\KB\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\vpykcvo8.default\extensions. I pasted my userChrome.css file in first the former, then the latter (restarting each time), but the width of the Bookmarks column hasn't changed.

I went to the Add-ons Manager & clicked on "Open the File Folder" in ChromeEditPlus' Options menu, but nothing new opened.

I see that in that Options menu there is a Customize tab. Could I increase the width of the Bookmarks column by adding the appropriate text there? If so, here's my next dilemma: I opened my userChrome.css file in Notepad & compared it to what's in the Customize box & the 2 are very different. I don't want to blow up FF by just overwriting what's in there now with what's in my old file. I *think* that I can figure out what the part is that did the column widening. Could I paste just that bit in? Or am I way off base?

You still need to use a custom style rule for this.

The chrome folder should be created at the top level of your profile folder. Extensions and other features may have their own chrome folders, but userChrome.css will not be found in those folders.

For a more interactive way to apply custom style rules to the Firefox user interface (or web pages), consider using the Stylish extension. As you are developing a rule, you can Preview the results instantly and iterate more quickly to your preferred rule.
