See this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):
You can set the new tab page on the location bar via the browser.newtab.url pref if that is what you mean.

It depends on what you mean by tabs...
If you have a page open in two different tabs, you can close one of them using the small "x" button that should appear on the tab, or by right-clicking the tab and choosing Close Tab.
If the problem is that two tabs open every time you start Firefox or create a new window, you probably need to edit your home page setting, which allows you to specify multiple pages to open in separate tabs. Please see this article for more information: How to set the home page.
If the problem is two entries on the Bookmarks Toolbar, you can right-click the unwanted bookmarks and choose Delete.
Does any of that help?
Thank you, jscher2000. I didn't phrase the question clearly but you did solve my problem. It was duplicates in the Bookmarks Toolbar and I was able to delete the extra unwanted one - yay! but, in my haste... I deleted the 'new tab'... how do I restore 'new tab'?

Hi Cynsa37, if you had the new tab button ("+") on the Bookmarks Toolbar, you must have used the Customize feature before. You can try that again, look for the new tab button among the unused buttons in the Customize dialog, and drag it back to your preferred location. This article describes how to get started: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars.
Is that the button you meant?
jscher2000 and cor-el, Thank you! I have so much to learn, trying to understand it bit by bit - thanks for your helpful assistance. I am re-reading all of this and I am learning new ways to do it.
