After updating to Firefox 24, Windows 7 64-bit breaks on reboot. The network icon in the taskbar not ready (blue circle stopped).
After updating Firefox 24, Windows 7 breaks after reboot. The network icon in the taskbar is not ready (blue circle over wifi network icon). But I can't do much. I can not open the network and sharing center (never opens). Even the task manager will hang when I click to show processes from all users. I have to do a system restore to have a functioning network again. I never even launched Firefox.

Wow...I finally have the solution. Windows updates were applied at about the same time as I updated Firefox. The bluetooth driver is what broke (which is part of the Centrino wireless). I ended up installing the latest driver from Intel, updating Windows then updating Firefox....and all is well.
Thank you so much for all your assistance. Take care.

Hi zjimmy,
Sorry you are having problems.
Are you sure this is a Firefox problem.
It sounds rather as if it is a general problem with Windows 7, or with your network | WiFi setup.
- Does Internet Explorer (IE) open and run ?
- Does IE connect to your WiFi & the internet ?
- Does Firefox actually open ?
- If not do you get any error message ?
- Have you had Firefox installed and running previously on the problem computer ?

Can you boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen)?
Thank you for your reply. Let me answer your questions then I'll list the sequence of events.
I have not tried IE because my network becomes broken. I was unable to connect to my router (blue circle on network icon in taskbar.)
- I think Firefox 24 opened, but I couldn't get on the network. Whereas if I install Firefox 23, I don't have any issues.
Here is the series of events:
- Firefox 23 works fine.
- Firefox 23 updates to 24. Seems OK.
- Eventually reboot PC
- I notice a blue circle over the wifi icon in taskbar. Network is not working. I can not select another network. I can't open network control panel. I open task manager. I tried to show all processes, but it failed. I tried system restore but couldn't.
- Boot to safe mode.
- Restore to previous state and reboot.
- Firefox 23 and wifi works.
- Download Firefox 24. Uninstall Firefox 23 manually. Install Firefox 24. Firefox 24 works.
- Reboot.
- Network hangs again so I do steps 5, 6, and 7 again.
- Submit an issue on Firefox's support forum.
It seems like anything dealing with the system/network gets broken after Firefox 24 is installed and I reboot. (I have to boot to safe mode to do a system restore because it won't open the window). On reboot, my network stalls (blue circle is not spinning on the wifi icon in taskbar). I don't know if a firefox service is causing an issue or not.
Thank you,
-J
You should not need to uninstall Firefox 23 manually. What happens if you allow Firefox 23 to update itself without doing an uninstall ?
So try
- do step 6 restore to good state
- then use Firefox Button -> Help -> About Firefox -> check for updates.
- you should then have a working Firefox 24
It is quite likely some other update or change is causing your problem..
Thank you for your response. I agree that the steps you list should have a working Firefox 24, but it did not work. I don't know what other information to gather to help assist in diagnosing the cause. If I restored to a good state and then (re)installed Firefox 24 and reboot, I have a problem.
Thank you.
Ok so what happened when you went into the Firefox about option did it try to update, and notify you it was downloading an update ? Did you then get any sort of error message.
Or did it update itself successfully and run Fx24 and only gave a problem after you restarted.
Did you try cor-el's suggestion of starting in Windows safe-mode by using the F8 key. Also try my suggestion again but start in Windows safe-mode and then restart again from Firefox 24 using Windows safemode.
What security related software are you using?
Looking again at your answers I note you do in fact say that you are rebooting in (Windows) SafeMode.
You are also saying
- IE is not working.
- your WiFi does not work
When you say Firefox does not work do you only mean it can not access the internet and router?
Does Firefox 24 open ? and does it allow you to for instance navigate to about:home or open a File from your local computer's hard drive ?

Hello. When I did the update, Firefox said it was successful and only gave a problem after rebooting.
I have not tried reinstalling Firefox 24 again. I tried twice and both times my computer did not function correctly after a reboot. So I'm hesitant to do it again.
My network device doesn't seem to work after installing Firefox 24 and rebooting the PC in normal mode. I wouldn't have thought Firefox could break my network adapter driver/configuration but that is what seems to occur. I can't ping anything either at that point. I can reboot as often as I want with Firefox 23 and have no issues.
Thank you.
I am wondering if for instance security related software is blocking Firefox 24 because it is not recognised.
- Did you look through the articles I linked to in my last post ?
- I asked above "What security related software are you using? "
I am also trying to check whether Firefox 23 will update itself. As long as you are not blocking (By changing settings or by using security software) updates Firefox 23 should update itself automatically with no need to manually uninstall Firefox 23, and no need to manually install Firefox 24.
As a temporary workaround to get a secure and up-to-date browser working you could consider installing the unofficial Firefox portable Fx24 as an additional browser.

Glad it is working again. Thanks for posting back.
I did think it quite possible it would turn out not to be a Firefox problem.
I have marked your last post as the thread solution.
